Is Louie a Silkshire? 4 Attachment(s) I've seen lots of threads concerning whether or not people own yorkies or silkys. I must admit I bought my first dog on a whim at a pet store because I fell in love with him. He was sold as a Yorkie but he is large and when he's out people often ask me what kind of dog he is  He is 2 yrs & 6 months old and weighs a healthy 9lbs. He is a very sturdy dog. I've attached some pictures of him. When I look at him I sometimes see both breeds. He has my heart and is my love but I'm curious to hear what all you yorkie connosisseurs think? |
In my opinion he looks like a Yorkie. He is absolutely adorable! |
Looks like a yorkie to me. |
He certainly looks yorkie to me, he is very cute :) |
I'm no expert and I only have my one girl....but he sure looks Yorkie to me. He is simply precious!:) |
He looks like a Yorkie to me. He is very handsome and poses well for the camera. My Sophie Kate is "sturdy" also, she is 2 years old and weights 8 lbs. I call her a BBY (Big Beautiful Yorkie). |
He is a cutie! My Hutch (he passed in December at 16) was a big boy. He weighed between 10 & 11 pounds. People asked me too what breed he was. I think your cute little guy is a Yorkie. |
4 Attachment(s) Looks like a Yorkie to me. Here is a Silky (first two pic) and here is a Yorkie (second two pics). Well-bred Yorkies and Silky's are very easy to tell apart. I've actually really fallen in love with Silky's through my research. Sometimes I REALLY think my Jackson is a Silky. He has a Silky body and face more and fits most Silky descriptions to a tee, he's 15lbs also ... your little one has a Yorkie face, IMO. But of course it's hard to know for sure. Really, odds are he's a Yorkie because Silky's are a lot less common. But who knows. Silky's were created from Yorkies and Australian Terriers. |
Looks like a yorkie to me too. He's probably just a big, but very cute boy. Silkies are #78 in dog registrations in the AKC, and yorkies are #3 for 2009, so chances are, he really is a yorkie. |

He is a YORKIE to me! I had someone on here last year or maybe 2 years ago, try to tell me that my Fiona is a Silky, not that I have anything against them, but don't tell me what breed my dog is when I know where she came from, and what she came from! He is a handsome YORKIE boy you got! |
He looks like a yorkie to me. A cute one at that! :) I love his name. My Louis is pronounced Louie. I just spell it L-O-U-I-S after Louis Vuitton!:D |
Adorable Yorkie! ♥ |
I really appreciate all your feedback and kind words about my doggie Louie. Thanks everybody for the info and opinions! |
I'd say he's all yorkie and cute as a button. |

What are the differences??? |

There are a lot more differences than just size. Although, realistically speaking, a Silky is not "that" much bigger than the standard Yorkie. The standard size for a Silky is 9-11 lbs, and the Yorkie is under 7 lbs. Depending on the dog, a few extra pounds can look like a lot, or not. And, just like there are Yorkies bigger than their standard, there are Silkies smaller than their standard. The Silky is slightly longer than is tall so when looking at a Silky they would look more like a rectangle where the Yorkie is supposed to be square, equally tall as they are long. The Silky muzzle is a little longer than a Yorkie. Yorkie's hair can reach the floor, but a Silky's hair should not. Silkies are generally lighter in color than the Yorkie as well. I also think there are big differences in Yorkie eyes, vs. the Silky eyes. I personally think Silky eyes are a bit smaller and more almond shape, where the Yorkie eye is rounder. I too thought our Moka was a Silky. She is only 7lbs, btw. After trying to find another like her, and doing a lot of research on Silkies, I now believe she is half Yorkie. I have also been watching the shelters around here as Silkies are pretty popular here, and they rarely advertise a dog as being Silky. They almost always call them Yorkies even when I think they look more Silky to me. Some people say that puppy mills use a Silky mom because they are bigger and can have more puppies, and I think that is what happened with my Moka. |

Anyways, Jackson fits EVERY Silky description. He's longer than he his tall, his face is like a Silky (snout is longer, etc), he's more muscular built, and all the temperament descriptions of a Silky match him. My aunt bought a Silky/Yorkie mix from a pet store :thumbdown but the dog looked identical to Jackson, he's just a bit smaller than Jackson. So I really tend to think he's a Silky/Yorkie. I can't pinpoint it... but he just doesn't ACT like other Yorkies. He's also got the lighter hair, etc. I've been in contact with some Silky breeders and I've had TEN tell me he looks 99% Silky. Soooo.... I really don't know! |
1 Attachment(s) And this is my Moka. She came with "papers" stating she is silky! Of course, they are not AKC, so who knows. Since Silkies are popular here, that's probably just what they called her to be more marketable. Anyways, she has more Yorkie coloring, a short muzzle with a Yorkie face, Silky ears, and Silky Body. When I was searching another Silky and visiting breeders, I never once came across a Silky breeder with anything that resembled Moka, but I do see Yorkies posted here that have quite a few similarities. |

For reference, here are some pix. First is Jackson, second is show Silky, third is Silky, fourth is Jackson. |
Exactly! Not breeding to standard is a big part of it. I realize too, that the Silky does have a big Yorkie influence in their genetics, but also that a breed standard has been set. You stated your breeder was just two dogs that got together, and I highly doubt Moka's breeder was bettering any breed standard, so there's our answer. LOL. We love them just the same though don't we.... |
