Help/Recommendations Please!
 
First and foremost, this forum is amazing. I have been lurking around for hours. I would greatly appreciate any insight and advice.

I am a huge dog lover. I grew up with dogs and have wanted one of my own since leaving for college. I am now in my second year of law school and have a really flexible next semester (only classes two days a week). I want to get a yorkie in December after finals. I will have two weeks with my pup and then school. But my dilemma is the summer. I was offered a summer job from May to August working full time. Taking account of my commute, I may be gone for as long as 11 hours. I have roommates that won't be gone as long as me. I would of course make my puppy comfortable. And my schedule will be fine again in the fall. What do you think? Is that too selfish of me? Thank you in advance for your help!

A lot of us have full time jobs and somehow make it work. It sounds like you may have more time to spend with your little one now vs later (summer). So you may have time for the potty training process, which can be long and hard on your patience (sometimes). I will admit I feel awfully guilty leaving my little one each and every morning for work. But he brings the biggest smile on my face when I walk in the door. You should see his happy dance! :D

Would you consider an older pup? (1 yr and up) They do require training, but it's a little less than a tiny puppy.

Welcome. Until 5 years ago I always worked full time and always had yorkies. If you can be certain that your roommates or someone can help out each day next summer it shouldn't be a problem.

Thank you for the replies. Do you think it would be possible to train the puppy in five months? I would also consider getting an older dog..

Have you considered doggie daycare. Training a dog in 5 months is possible if you are consistent and diligent. You definitely cfannot expect a dog to hold it for 11 to 12 hourd so I woud suggest using, pee pads or the potty patch in addition to going outside.

To me personally, it was just easier with a 1 yr old dog. He came potty trained, un-neutered (took care of that ASAP), with a bad marking habit. I "fixed" all that in 1.5-2 months before my schedule got wacky and I had less time for him. Now that I have a full load with work, and some days I don't come home till.. well, let's just say late. ;) I honestly don't worry about him as much. He has water, companionship (although he's not always nice to the people at home), free roam of the house (he earned that) and a clean piddle pad. I do miss his sweet little face though.

Awesome, thanks! I will really think about that.

I was also wondering if anyone has a Maltese? if so, what are the major differences between the breeds? Our family dog is one (she's 16!), and I love her. I'm leaning more towards a yorkie but since I never had a yorkie, I would love to know any differences between the two. Thank you! :D

I would say go to the YTCA home page, open that up read up on the description. Then go to the Maltese mother club's site, (sorry, I don't know what it is off hand) and pull up the description there and read through that.

I too was considering both breeds but the spunky, stubborn attitude of a terrier won me over. Plus, it didn't hurt that my bf has a maltese at home. Very pretty, but the coat color makes her more high maintenance than what I could handle. Yorkies are high maintenance too, but the breed traits and coat color won me over.

Welcome to YT.
I work full time too 8 hours a day mon-fri but I still live with my parents and as we all work different shift patterns there will always be someone there and Poppy isnt left alone for long.
I think your situation will be fine aslong as there is someone there to check on the pup while you are away at work.

I originally wanted a Maltese, but the Yorkie spunk totally won me over. :) It's great that your class schedule will allow you to have plenty of bonding time with your new pup. I got Levi my during my senior year of undergrad, and it was amazing. I had only two classes and my schedule was flexible. It worked perfectly as I had so much free time to spend with him. I cannot imagine a better time to have added a new pup into my life.

I didn't get Levi as a puppy. He was almost two when I got him, and he is close to three now. He came with some unwanted behaviors (he wasn't fully potty-trained, he did not know any basic commands), but we have worked through most of his issues and he is honestly the most perfect dog for me.

Good luck in your search! Yorkies and Maltese are both adorable, and I am sure you will find your perfect baby.
