hello all
 
just joined the forum and am just saying hello, have a 15 week old yorkie pup, finding it hard to work out when she needs outside to go potty though. very little is done in the house, any tips.

I am not the best to answer that. I have 4 and they all still have accidents. They key is keeping her confined when you can't watch her. Start looking for signs she gives just before going ie sniffing ground, running around in circles. You can give her a little treat when she goes and lots of praise. She is still very young but with persistence and a careful watch she will get it. You will find a lot of tips on training here.

Let it out very frequently, and praise it constantly when you have success. You will still have some accidents along the way. Confinement, frequent visits to the outdoors, and praise.

welcome!

my little one is 11 months old and still hasn't mastered telling us when she has to go out! We've done the bell at the door, an actual doggie door bell, treats at the door...you name it! Our shepherd had mastered the bell in a few tries! Other than when she first wakes up, whether crated or in bed with me..the rest of the day is spent as a guessing game or looking for signs...and her signs can be confusing!! lol

Natalie don't tell me when she has to go out. Thank goodness she is piddle pad trained but she still has accidents and she is a year old. Just be consistant and watch for signs. Natalie runs around in circles before she goes potty.

Mine sniffs the ground. I rush her over to her piddle pad. She is still working it out though...she is almost 4 months.

I have bells that hang from the doorknob and I have trained mine to ring when she needs to go out. It works well for us. Patience and consistency- confine her to a smaller space to start and working your way up. Take her out frequently and have her ring the bells on your way out...praise with treats and pretty soon she will begin ringing on her own. Then you have to take her out immediately to her potty area and praise praise praise with yummy treats if she goes potty. It takes time but she will get it! :D

Ditto! We have bells, too, and they are a blessing. We never had any accidents after 6 months of age and still don't. If you have an x-pen to put your little one in when you cannot be watching, that will help a lot. Just take your yorkie out at least every two hours and use one phrase every single time, like "Go potty," and they soon understand. You will also want to take outside about 20 minutes after eating. After they go, make a really big deal out of it and say, "Good girl!" You can use a little treat like a cheerio even.:D If you want to use bells, you can just hang some big bells on the door on a long ribbon. They go thru a stage of ringing them all of the time, but eventually understand and use them correctly. Just start out by taking her foot or nose to ring them and ask her if she wants to go potty . They eventually ring them with their nose. I used my yorkie's foot to start her off with. Didn't want to scare her by pushing her nose into it. Good luck!

Sophie was 3 years old and still had an accident from time to time but she was finally coming to me and whining when she wanted to go out. Scooter had a bad day today because I was very busy so I blame myself. You have to take them out a lot when they are first learning and they have such small bladders. Just have patience it takes time.
Try a treat and a whole lot of praise. It seems to be working for Scooter.

Hi and welcome to YT.
I am currently potty training my 5 1/2 month old.
I crate her at night and when nobody is home and so far she hasnt messed in her crate.
We take her out first thing when she comes out of the crate and before she goes into the crate, everytime she goes outside I say "go pee pee" and she gets a treat when she goes potty outside.
Sometimes she will have an accident but she is still learning, when she has an accident I show her what she has done and say "naughty" then put her straight outside and continue with the "go pee pee" command.
She dosnt make a noise when she needs to go out but I can tell because she starts to get restless e.g. wandering around and sniffing the floor, if I ask her "want pee pee?" she usually runs to the back door.
In time they will learn but it can take a lot of patience. Good luck.
