Seeing the world through new eyes One of my favorite things about having a new puppy is getting to rediscover all the things I take for granted in daily life. This morning was a standout. While Tallulah and I were getting breakfast (me warming her food in the microwave, she tearing around the kitchen) her bell stopped tinkling so I looked around expecting to catch her pooping in the wrong place. She was plastered against the wall with her neck stretched out as far as it could go and the strangest expression on her face. Well, after her playpen escape last night I was worried about injuries and my heart just sank. Then I realized she was leaning on the heater vent enjoying the warm air. We turned on the heater last night - the first time we've needed it since we got her. That look that I thought was pain turned out to be ecstasy. I wish I had had my camera to catch that moment. The heater cycled off soon and her expression turned indignant. She started pawing and biting at the vent cover till I had to pick her up. Later we were in the bathroom and the heater cycled on again. Same response. So now she realizes that it's not just that one spot in the kitchen, but anywhere there is a vent cover. So naturally we had to explore all the walls in the house to check out the vents. It really is pretty miraculous when you stop to think about it, that warm air can come out of those funny looking holes in the wall. Saturday we are going to Scooba the kitchen floor. I'm going to have the video camera ready for that one. |
So cute! :) |
That is so precious. I am sure you were horrified at first thinking something was wrong but then when you found out it had to be quite hilarious. Thank you so much for sharing! I just love stories about reactions from new experiences. And it sounds like you better be keeping that heater on b/c Tallulah LIKES it :D Peggy, Monkey & Maddie :daisy: |
That's adorable! I am loving your stories of Tallulah! I feel like I know her already and can't wait to watch her grow up here on YT. :) |
OH my! So adorable! If she remains amazed at the warmth coming out of the holes, we definitely need to see a picture of her expression. ;-) |
I'm the one who was amazed tonight. We were in the bathroom a little while ago. She checked out the vent first, then she started prancing around looking for a good spot to go. I told her "go potty on your pad" and she went right over and piddled on it. Good girl! But the amazing part was that just a minute later she trotted over and pooped on the pad without any coaching! You'd better believe I praised her big time. |
What a great story, and so true. :) Almost makes me want to get a puppy. Almost. ;) |

Tallulah's stories are so cute. I'd love a puppy, Levi would love a brother, but I'm not so sure I want to go through all the training!! Sounds like you are having a blast with your new baby girl. She sure is cute!! |
I really enjoy reading your posts. Your love for your little Tallulah is so obvious in your words. You delight in each new discovery she makes and it makes me smile too, clear over here on the other coast! What amazing power these little furkids have! I am having much the same joy in the rediscovery of puppy ownership. I love all my dogs but there is something fresh and cleansing about a new puppy. They brighten the mood, revitalize the older pups, and just generally bring a renewed sense of happiness into the family. I see now how much we were needing Annie. She may well be responsible for my mental health and well-being. I have not smiled and laughed so much in years. I like feeling needed and genuinely loved by this little 2 pound toddler pup. She is growing daily, learning new things and finding new ways to bend me to her will. All the while, I feel myself sort of un-thawing and finding new purpose. I am finding that is is perfectly fine to laugh out loud and still revere the memory of my husband. I think how much he would have loved Annie too. I watched my son, Dustin, open his heart to Annie right from the start. I saw that he too, had been needing her without knowing it. It felt so good to hear him laugh and watch the tenderness in his eyes as he played with her so carefully. She may look like just a tiny puppy, but she is so much more -- she is hope and happiness -- she let's us know we are going to be okay. |
That is so true, and so touching. I feel NEEDED for the first time since I lost Bungee. I have a wonderful family and I am loved, but providing for this incredible little spirit gives me a purpose in life that's more than just to amuse myself. Your story brought tears to my eyes. |
