Any Yorkie Runners? I myself am a marathon runner. I have two yorkies that are about 5 pounds each and the LOVE to come running with me. I was wondering if there are any others who take their babies running with them, and how far do you go.? This morning I took them out for 4 miles, and they kept up the whole time with me. I realize 5 pounds is a small dog, but the amount of comments and laughs I get from people I pass by on the bike trails is ridiculous. Have they never seen dogs go running before?! Anyways, just wondering if there were any others out there that can relate to us! :) |
I can relate, but I used to run with a 140 pound Cane Corso. We used to walk out Yorkie 3-4 miles when she was young and in AZ. Now she goes for a mile walk a day. She walks a block, gets carried for 4 blocks, walks a block, gets carried.... Becareful running them. Their little leg bones at 5 pounds are like chicken wing bones, except smaller. Be alert to the first signs of limping, peeing blood, and lethargy. Have you ever had their hips and leg's X-Rayed? Wish I coulr tun that far! Now I get tired driving the distance of a marathon. |
*I* don't run but I'm pretty sure Jackson could easily run 4 miles along with someone. My step-dad took him once and only ran a mile but he almost did the whole thing! He's also 15lbs. But I've seen some pretty energetic and fast little ones! That's adorable. I do take Jackson rollerblading when I visit my dads house. I put on my rollerblades and OFF we go! He loves to pull me along, as it's the only chance he's allowed to actually PULL me. I also will get the bike and he runs along beside me. |
I'm not a jogger, but I bet Thor could do a daily three mile run with no trouble. When we go hiking, he runs the entire time... up the trail, back to me, up the trail, back to me, up the trail, you get the idea. He's so small that even on a walk, he's going at a fast trot most of the time. I've been toying with the idea of running with him, but I haven't found a no hands leash I like. |
Levi can run a mile pretty easily and he weighs about 5.5 pounds. I don't think he could handle a 4-mile jog though, that's impressive! He can walk for miles, but I think he'd get tired of running after about a mile and a half without a break. I also haven't found a hands-free leash I am comfortable with using. Wondering what the OP uses for such long runs. When I've taken Levi running, I've just used a lead wrapped around my wrist and it wasn't very convenient or comfortable. |
Sophie Kate runs with me, not long since it gets so hot here but she could go a mile in the cool weather. Funny story, at our gym they had a "dog run" that we attened. Of course there were many runners with their "running dogs" and me with my Yorkie. As you can imagine we got plenty of comments but you know who finished the entire run with her Mom? Sophie Kate did, new respect for Yorkie's at my gym now. |
