Cleaning Zach's Behind from Poop Between Grooming Does anybody know how to clean a yorkie's behind from poop. Zach always seems to have problems with the poop sticking to the hairs on his behind. I usually soak him in warm water and it comes off but now it's getting cooler and he won't let me use the hair dryer on him. He is going to the groomer in a few days but what can I do between groomings. When I try to remove it he screams and he won't let me cut the hairs, He's sort of hyper and I'm afraid to hurt him. He's my first Yorkie and I panic easily. I can't stand to hear him cry it breaks my heart. |

Also, keep the hair in that area trimmed regularly. Check it weekly, or every time you bathe him and make sure it's always trimmed up so nothing can get caught up. A small pair of scissors from Sally's Beauty Supply would be perfect for this. |
Hello fellow LI'r. I am from Oakdale. I usually run the sink water over Farrah's behind and then soap it all up, rinse and snuggle her in a towel for a while. The poo in the butt hair is nasty but the groomer will save the day! BTW, what groomer do you use? Not happy with our latest cut. : ( |
the things we do for our babies. If you had a told me 2 yrs ago I would have been wiping a dog's butt I would of said you are crazy. I am never wiping a dogs butt. Oh how things change, I am wiping a dogs butt. :p I love her sleeping with me so I do what I gotta do. I use the flushable baby wipes too. They are great for in between groomings. |
Definately keeping the private area trimmed is important. You might also look at what you are feeding. You should not always have a mess back there. I will sometimes give mine a quick wipe when they come in from doing their business but usually there is nothing noticeable. If you feed a good quality dog food, they are normally "low-residue" -- meaning tiny little tootsie roll poops that do not mess their behinds. That alone would be worth the extra cost, not to mention how much better it is for the little ones. :) But they all will have the occasional loose stool. Then the baby wipes are just the ticket! But for that horrible semi-loose one that they seem to have sat in and stuck their hair to .... good luck. Those take a soaking and rubber gloves! Hope I never find one of those again! |
I agree with everyone else. It is really important to keep their rear ends trimmed, but if you feed a good quality food, their stool is usually very firm, and doesn't make a mess. If you just use some small scissors on their behind every few weeks, you won't have an issue :) |

Fully agree that a better quality food should ease the problem. However, for the occassional wipe that I need to give Rocco, I eased him into gettting used to it by feeding him a treat while wiping. Eventually, he'd hold still and let me wipe, knowing a treat was on the way for a "good boy butt wipe" :p. I usually only need to wipe when he gets a "hanger" because he's swallowed some long hair that get it stuck and it dangles onto his fur (gross, I know). |
I stick their behinds under the faucet in the laundry tub that is running with warm water. Shampoo, rinse, repeat if necessary. Dry with a towel and then comb when they're dry. It's not a big deal really and mine actually like the warm water on their stinky behinds. I can't stand a smelly dog, so that's what I do every time they come in with some poop still clinging. |
Trimming is important but how to do it is as important or more. A great tip I got right here in YT was to use a small comb to keep the scissors from touching the skin ;). I had used the electric trimmer and they were liking their butts for days (I think they got razor burn or maybe I cut too close). Also, make sure the scissors are pointing down or to the side in case they move their tail. I always enlist the help of their daddy when I use scissors, to be on the safe side. I always clean them after potty even if the poop is solid because after doing it for so long, they expect it (they come inside, lift their tail, stand still and wait to be cleaned) and sometimes they look clean but they're really not. I always use a slightly damped paper towel or unscented, hypoallergenic wipe, never dry. My HB uses dry and they run away from him (HB is also a little rough--he rubs, I dub gently). :thumbup: Go on Youtube and search for dog grooming to see how to's :animal-pa |
First this is to Ourfirstyorkie how far away from Deer Park to you live? This will be Zach's first haircut and I plan to use the puppy cut. I made an appointment with Willow Pet Hotel's All Dog Grooming and I'll let you know how things turn out. I'm kind of new to Suffolk County and I don't know all of the towns yet. Okay, We feed the puppys Health Extension. Zoe seems to have no problem although her hair is kind of long on the backside, it's not as long and as fine as Zach's I've beem soaking him in warm water and that seems to get most of it off. I'm going to try baby wipes. As far a trimming him, he is very very hyper and hard to hold down even with two people and I'm so afraid of hurting him. I can't wait to get him to the groomer next Saturday. |

Farrah eats Taste of the Wild kibble only and no table scraps, etc. Her poop varies by the bowl movement...sometimes solid, sometimes runny and always has a bit on her backside when she is done. I use Cottonelle wipes and flush them. Good luck with the groomer. :) |
I use unscented baby wipes too and my groomer keeps the hair there cut close. Good Luck!! |
