What's the difference??!! I am not understanding something and I hope someone/anyone can shed an opinion..... I had called my vet to get something for fleas. He won't be able to see Lucky until Friday afternoon. Apparently he's doing another clinic as well. But he said that Lucky will need either Advantage Multi or Frontline. I'm fine with that but why charge me 60.00 for the actual check over appointment when he can have it ready for me to just pick up at his office??!!It just makes me mad when I will end up paying almost 175.00 for something that I can buy at Petsmart (they carry Advantage Multi and Frontline also) for 100.00! He said he would like to just have it on file and also go over the directions on how to apply the doses to Lucky! He already did that last year when Lucky was on the same meds..... Would it be so wrong to buy the Advantage Multi and do this on my own without the vet appointment? I have the worst luck when it comes to spending a ton of money for when only to find out it wasn't at all necessary......:( |
I would personally just buy it on your own if they are wanting to charge you a fee for you basically buying something they will make a profit on already  When I get it from my vet they have it ready and I just walk in a pay (only for the product) and thats it :) |
Sorry but where is Brampton? Aw i am sorry you are paying so much. I would phone them and tell them you dont want to buy it at their office and go to Petsmart. Good luck xxxx |
I would think that you could just buy it from the store. Especially if your vet has already been over it with you. You can also purchase it from kingwholesale.com, it comes in a 3 pack for $37.49. They also have free shipping, but they charge you a fee of $5.00 if your order is less than $100. I have ordered other stuff from them before and their shipping is really fast. |
Advantage Multi also controls heartworms & requires a prescription to get. Pets need to be tested annually for heartworms - my vet insists on it before he'll renew the prescription for HW preventative and it's part of my pup's annual exam. It can be fatal if you treat them with a HW preventative while they're infected. When's the last time Lucky was tested for heartworms? That's probably why you're vet wants you to come in Frontline is only for fleas/ticks and is available without a prescription. |
I would not pay an office visit if all you need is the flea med. Anyone can read the directions for heaven's sake and if you have been using it, that insane to tell you he needs to go over directions! If I was already going for a visit for annual, then fine. But my vet lets me come in anytime for my Heartguard and Frontline plus. He has never charged for dispensing it and he matches PetMeds online prices! I would call another vet or get some at Petsmart. I noticed ours just started selling it too. |

That's just it....Lucky is 2 yrs old and he was tested for the heartworm back in June! He was clean so I opted out of the meds. I was talking to the breeder that I got him from and she advised me that with the cooler fall and cold winter heartworm isn't at all common here, that's like over vaccinating....She don't do the heartworm meds on any of her dogs! She has other ways of preventing the mosquito biting! So, I also know that my vet has no intention on testing for heartworm because he said that he wants the visit just so he can document this on Lucky's file. Please don't get me wrong here, I don't mind spending money on my baby but when it's necessary. Wasted money could have been $$ for other things for him!! Thank you Everyone for the comments....:) |

I live in Toronto, and at the end of October I stop flea and tick meds. First by end of Oct we are finished with swimming, and the weather is cool enough now not to worry about fleas and ticks. |
I always bought my Frontline Plus from the vet...last time I was told they stopped carrying it because Wal-Mart had it for half price. So now we get it from Wal-Mart. |

Heartworm tests need to be done if your pet has been off the monthly pill for at most 2 months. He could have picked up heartworms any time after you walked out the vets door on the day of the last blood test. Its always best to give the heartworm pills once a month from spring to fall. then retest the next spring before starting again. Heartworm meds MUST be purchased from the vet because it requires a prescription. Flea meds can be purchased at a pet store. However, while cheaper then the vet, you may not be getting the same product. And if your pet as a severe reaction to the meds the manufacturer will not pay for treatment if the product was not purchased from a vet. |
