Looking for a Yorkie puppy in Georgia
 

Hi! I am looking for a Yorkie puppy in Georgia. I found a breeder in Pearson, GA, called Walker Kennels and put a deposit on a female 9 week old puppy. I will be picking her up once she is 12 weeks old. Has anyone heard of Walker Kennels and do they have any feedback? It would be much appreciated!

I bought a Yorkie in 2004 from "breeders" in Miami (Armanda and Julie Soutullo) who ended up being infected with the parvovirus. I had to put her to sleep after only 4 months :( Those terrible people have tons of complaints against them anywhere online now and apparently did this to lots of people. They got their puppies from a puppy mill in Argentina (even though they pretended to be breeders themselves) and their puppies are plagued by a variety of serious health complications. So sad :(

I was so upset after this terrible experience that I don't want a similar one. I am looking for a smallish (4-6 pound) Female Yorkie puppy from a reputable breeder.

looked up the web site they have some lil ones that is for sure but other then that i don't know anything about them i got my lil one in GA.11 months ago from HOGANSVILLE GA. she is a small one only 3 pounds

I just took a quick look at their website. :eek::eek:

They're willing to ship puppies once they're 8 weeks old?!?! Yorkies need to stay with their mothers until they're AT LEAST 12 weeks old. 8 weeks is way too early to let them leave home and certainly too young to ship. :(

They breed several other breeds besides yorkies, another big red flag for me.

And there is virtually NO health guarantee at all - none at all if you don't take the puppy to the vet during the first 24 hours. Some congenital problems won't even show up for months.

I didn't see any mention of the dams and sires, only pictures and prices of puppies for sale.

That's what I found in just glancing at the site but it's enough to make me run in the other direction!!

Personally, I don't like to see breeders breeding many different breeds. Since I don't know this particular breeder, I can't give you any reviews good or bad. I hope it works out for you, though.

Do a google map search on the kennel address to get a better idea of the area.

Also, her website made me want to run in the other direction. I agree with Bon Bon completely in her assessment of the site.

They are on the USDA kennels A cert list. (and I am not sure what the listing there means. They were last inspected June 2009 according to APHIS.

The time to get feedback would be before putting a non-refundable deposit on a puppy.
Her health guarantee? There basically is none - (big red flag)
Breeds several different breeds (another red flag)
has teacups (another red flag
A micro tiny male who at 9 weeks is 14 ozs and she has him available for sale! (another red flag)

Too many red flags! I would be running away from this greeder as fast as I could.

Walker Kennels looks more like a puppy mill than a reputable breeder. There is no mention of registration or health tests of parents. In fact there is little on the website that makes me believe they are breeding for any reason other than money.

Thanks for all the replies! I was a little skeptical about their website too. I went to visit and it didn't seem bad but I also didn't really know what to look for. I am going next week with my boyfriend to check it out and double-check we want a puppy from them. The deposit was low, and either way no amount of money is worth the heartbreak!

I asked another breeder that I liked for her opinion on their puppies and she had good things to say. She told me she had initially gotten her puppies from them and that she trusts them. That's why I really wanted more feedback from people who had purchased their puppies before too.

Thank you everyone for the advice-- I am going in Wednesday with eyes wide open so we will see what we decide!

I purchased a Yorkie from Walker Kennel. I did a lot of internet research and saw they have been in business since 1965. I figured they would be good place. I was pleasantly surprised and very pleased with them. I was looking for a yorkie not too small but not too big either and they had exactly what I was looking for. I would recommend them hands down and definitely buy from them again.

Pros: Great selection

Cons: Long drive

I'm sorry, when you said you wanted to find a reputable breeder I assumed you meant it. That's why I took up my time to look at their website and give you my honest opinion.

This "kennel" (that word should say it all right there) is not a reputable breeder. :thumbdown If you buy from this place, you'll be knowingly and willingly supporting a puppy mill (that point is obvious from the sheer number of puppies they have for sale). :( Do you know what a puppy mill is?

I'm new to this forum but after reading this string of comments I felt compelled to sign up and post a response. We purchased our yorkie baby from Walker Kennels three years ago and Baylee has been a happy and healthy addition to our home ever since. She has had zero medical problems and she's spot on in personality for yorkies. I've visited Walker Kennel and it is NOT a puppy mill. Just because a puppy is not raised in a home does not make a kennel a puppy mill. Professional breeders and home breeders are doing the same things - selling puppies - and this string seems a little judgmental. Walker Kennel appeared to love all their dogs and all of them were well cared for and I found the family running the kennel extremely helpful with questions/concerns I had. As we all know, caring for a baby yorkie can be hard when they are small and WK was great about giving me instructions on how to handle our new baby. Yes, they do sell other breeds. They are breeders. They are not home breeders so the puppies are not sitting in a living room. That does not mean they are loved any less. In fact, I beleive that WK are better breeders than most because they have so much experience as well as a name and reputation to maintain. I'd recommend WK 100%, we are actually planning on purchasing our second from them in the next few months.

It seems suspicious to me when people post on this site genuinely asking about a breeder, YTer's give negative feedback, then a "new member" joins right at the same time of the thread/discussion, speaks about how this breeder is so wonderful everyone far and wide is referring people to this breeder.

I got my yorkie through a YTCA breeder/exhibitor in my area. Wonderful pup, good health, wonderful disposition and socialization. I would highly recommend checking into YTCA breeders in your area. From my experience, it is worth even traveling to get a pup from one of these breeders.

Seriously...if I got a penny for everytime someone did this I would be a millionaire. :rolleyes:

Anyways that is just another red flag to me and I'm sure it is to many others as well. Take your time and look for breeders in your area through breed clubs and also talk to people here.
"Professional breeders" and reputable breeders don't do the same thing-sell puppies. A reputable breeder is bettering the breed. A professional breeder is looking to make a profit.
I'd definitely run in the other direction-way too many red flags.

I don't know how you can say they are not a puppymill! IMO, they are a commercial breeder cranking out puppies for profit alone. They are even breeding mix breeds, for heaven's sake. The website is typical internet seller and they have 18 puppies for sale. How many adult dogs do they have living in kennels and getting no stimulation whatsoever? Is that the life you think would be good for your Baylee? Would you want to see Baylee living like that?

Frankly, the website made me sick, those are not loved animals and those people are not hobby breeders breeding the best and healthiest dogs they can breed. They are breeding for a buck, the biggest profit they can. They don't even say if the dogs are registered or what the registry of the puppies might be.

I really have to wonder, too, when the first post someone makes on this site is in defense of a commercial breeder, or puppymill.

This thread is almost a year old.....I find it strange that as a new member your first post is in defense of this breeder and only based on your experience.

There are many discrepencies in your post. Walker Kennels, until this post I've never heard of them....so what name and reputation do they have to uphold.....

But, I do agree with you on a couple of things raising pups in the home does not always consititue a reputable breeder...much more to it than that. There are a couple of posts in the Library that I suggest you read. They outline the difference between a BYBer/PuppyMill/Reputable Breeder.
