stuffing in children's toys highly toxic A dog ate a child's teddy bear and was very sick. When she opened the dog up to remove what she thought was an intestinal obstruction she found a huge gelatin type mess inside and the dogs intestines were black and the tissue dead. The dog will die no surgery can fix him up there was no living intestine left from stomach to colon. This was not an obstruction. .... so she called the manufacturer of the Teddy Bear on a quest to find out what the gel was and what killed the dog. Turns out the stuffing in children's toys contains ingredients for flame retardants and mite control! It is designed to be come a gel. It is highly toxic. Now you would think a child's toy would be safe because it is for children, but they don't expect a child to eat the stuffing of the toys... huummmm that seems a bit scary too. But we all know dogs demolish stuffed toys. So do not give or buy your dog any children's stuffed animals... some people get them at goodwill etc. The vet will be posting a warning and story and I will send any other facts as needed and as I learn more. Maybe some children's toys do not have this ingredient, but better to be safe then sorry. So meanwhile, make sure all your dog toys are for dogs. Please pass this on... it is a horrible death she described and one that can be avoided. |
OH NO!! The in-laws give their collie mix stuft animals all the time. He hasn't ingested it yet, but that isn't to say he won't. Thanks for the GREAT post!! I will have to pass it along! |
One of my girlfriends went to the dollar store and bought some children's little stuffed animals and put squeaker toys in them for all our dogs. One of mine started pulling the stuffing out of one and was so sick for 2 days I rushed her to the hospital and the vet couldn't figure out what it was. Than another one started getting a really upset stomach back to the vet. I came home and I saw there was a small ball of stuffing on the floor and thought there might be something in it that she was allergic to and this is what I found. Unbelievable! |
Stormy likes my stuffed animals for some reason and something just told me to get them away from her - I think bc I read someone say their dog died from eating the stuffing in a pillow or something like that. I will DEFINITELY not let her play with any stuffed animals anymore. Thanks for posting this! |
How terrible. I am going to go through my girls toy box and pull put all non dog toys. Thanks for the alert. |
Thank you so much for posting this information! I linked it to another post--I hope you don't mind. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/fun...ml#post3299893 |
Levi doesn't get stuffed toys at all anymore - dog toys or human kid toys. The "stuffing" in general just makes me too nervous! He does play with the stuffing-free squeaky toys all the time now. They are such a nice alternative. Thanks for the info. |
Thank you for sharing this with us. I have only given our dogs toys made specifically for them. But now I am concerned with stuffing in those toys also. Most toys are made overseas so we have no way of knowing if these are really safe or not. I do supervise my dogs and cats with their toys. If I see them trying to destroy or chew toys, I take away immediately. And I never allow them to have toys when they are not supervised. |
Wow I give my babies stuffed toys which are origionally for kids all the time. Thanks for the warning! |
RE: Stuffing in children's toys highly toxic Hi, Thanks for all the info. I would just like to say that I don't think that good branded toys have such toxic stuffings in their toys. That is why they are so expensive and they have a reputation which they have to live up to. So i would advice you all to always buy branded toys and avoid any cheap ones. :) __________________________________________________ ______ Looking for nice toys: Outdoor Toys and Outdoor Toys For Children |
Sad to say, it would be better for the kids to play with dog toys than their own. Even the pet food is held to a high standard because kids will eat that. Amazing how that works. Alot of people food is not good for our furkids. Ummm... |
Tibbe just has dog toys but this is good to know! Poor little dog. Maybe this can save another life. |
I have purchased children's toys for Joey before, but I remove the stuffing and use the crinkly wax paper from cereal, he loves the crinkly sound. Some children's toys are still made with button eyes, these also should be removed. Thanks for the warning! |

Thanks for posting - I have grandkid's stuffed toys on the bed they sleepover in - both my puppies go and fetch them into the living room, from now on the toys will be on the top bunk. You just try so hard to keep them safe outside the home, and this can happen..... |
