OMG! Zoey ate a mouse What Now? Zoey (9 mos) went out this morning and I left her in the back yard for about 10 minutes. When I went out to check on her she did not come. I called and called and looked all over the yard - even in the pond. We have coyotes all over the open space behind our house. We have "coyote rollers" which prevent the things from jumping into our yard but Zoey is so little I thought she might have slipped between the wrought iron and the stucco wall. I climbed over and callled and called her. For some reason I looked back into our yard and there she was. When I got back into the yard she came over and barked at me and ran like a crazy little thing. Then I saw a tail hanging out of her mouth. YUCK! She must have been hiding in the bushes eating that thing. All that was left was a patch of hair and the tail. She came running into the house but would not let me near her. I finally caught her and locked her in her kennel. What will happen next? We she throw up? Should I call the vet? Any ideas are welcomed. Cherie |
Get her to the vet ASAP emergency. If the mouse ate rat poison it could transfer to her. Make her puke or get to the vet and have them do it. |
I hadn't thought of poison. Calling the vet right now. |
not only that but god only knows what illnesses that mouse could have i dont know if mice carry dog illnesses but i would be afraid |
Yes, many times when mice are caught it is because they are sick, either poisoned, old or ill. If you live in an area where people use mouse/rat bait in their homes, it is definitely something to watch out for and be aware of. Even if the mouse is already dead, the poison stays in the mouse, so whatever eats the mouse, dog or cat or wild animal, the poison will reactivate as the mouse is digested, and it's the same as if the animal ingested the poison. If she throws up, take the vomit with you to the vet. |

Winnie always eats mouse heads, it's like my cat leaves it just for her. She hasn't gotten sick or anything yet, I live in the middle of a field so there is a TON of field mice. I try and look for them but she finds them before me and is way too fast to catch. |
I called the vet. They said I didn't have to bring her in but watch for vomiting or diarrhea. I checked with the neighbors and they have not put out poison lately. I just checked on her and she is ok. PO'ed about being locked in the kennel. Too Bad. She gave me a huge scare. |
Another yucky problem associated with eating rodents is tape worms. The mouse surely had flea's. And that is one of the main ways dogs and cats get tape worms...by swallowing fleas. |

She's out of the kennel now. I put her in so if she threw up I would see it. She is a good one for hiding when doing things she knows she is not supposed to do. Actually, she has never been locked in before and she did take it well. After a few yips and yaps she was quiet for one hour. |
Cherie, I hope Zoey gets passed the temptation of eating her catches. It is a worry. Roxy has spent the past several months bringing her 'prizes' into the house (dead of course) and laying them at our feet. Then she will sit and smile very proudly at us. It is sooo funny. So far she's brought in 2 dead birds, baby bunny, couple of small frogs (1 live/1 dead), 2 dead moles and I think a couple other critters. I sit there not knowing how to react. Do I praise her? Do I scold her? Never know what's the correct thing to do. Nothing is going to remove that instinct to hunt from her. So brace yourself, there could be more treasures anytime she's outside. So far I give her the 'leave it' command (which she's very good at), get a paper towel to pick up her prize & dispose of it. That works for me, but then she hasn't eaten it. If Zoey is going to eat her catches, ask the vet what all you can do to handle the situation safely in case you aren't able to reach your vet at the time. Good luck!!! |
