The sit command Okay so I taught Brandi the sit command. She is pretty good at it. I tell her to sit for no reason other than that its the only command that she will do what I say. Great right? There's just one little problem. She will only do the sit command in my bedroom and no other room :(! I've tried everywhere in the house as well as outside and she won't do it, maybe with treats and even thats a struggle. WTH???? I tried telling her to sit when we were in the kitchen and you would of thought I was torturing her with the looks she was giving me. She would not do it. And even when her butt touched the floor to act like she was sitting, she wouldnt sit all the way. It was like she was saying I did sit dang it now leave me alone. :p You gotta love em. |
Hehe, this often happens when you start training them. Do you usually train her in your room? You need to condition her to do her trick elsewhere. Definitely use treats and praise and reward her when she sits in the kitchen. You sort of have to show her that it means the same thing everywhere. Dogs are weird that way, lol. You're right, you've got to love them :) If you want to teach her something new, try and teach her to look you in the eye. Hold a treat in your hand and make sure that she sees it. Then move the hand to the spot in front of your eyes. When her eyes follow the treat and focus on your face, say the command (Look, or Focus, or whatever you choose) and then praise and treat her. Do this a few times and then hold you hand still (out of sight) and say the command again. Wait until she looks you in the eye and when she does, praise and reward her. You need to be patient to let her connect the dots and realize what you want. Otherwise she will get lazy and won't think for herself. Keep training sessions short and use yummy treats when you are teaching something new. Also, look into clicker training - it makes everything so much easier :) |
Sit !!! One of my dogs will perform the sit trick anywhere. The other one REFUSES to sit on the hardwood floor !!! She will only sit when she's on the carpet or on a rug. What a brat !!!! :animal36 |
Roxie won't sit on hard surfaces. She will pretty much only sit on the carpeted surfaces in the house. When we were training, the instructor even had us bring a towel to class so that she would do sit and rollover, because the floors in Petsmart are concrete and she wouldn't have any of that. |
