:) poppy is 4 in december and she has always gone up the stairs , but never come back down them  she just stands at the top crying , she has never fell down the stairs or had a fright , love jill n poppy xx :aimeeyork |
Roxie does this too. She rarely goes up the stairs to begin with, but when she does she gets stuck at the top and we have to carry her down. She's almost 4! |
For pups that age looking down the flight of stairs can be daunting, plus it seems like they are a bit top heavy (Bf says half of Rizzos weight is his head, lol) so it's better to carry them down anyway. Just be patient and let the pup figure it out in her own time, until then just carry them down. |
Poppy is 19 weeks and she is the same, she makes a dart for the stairs and will run up to the top.. then sit there and cry until I bring her back down. |
Put a treat on the steps just out of her reach, make her go down the stairs to get it,each time she gets the treat, put the treat 1 step further down, until she goes all the way down the stairs.BTW if you have hardwood stairs,it may help to put carpet strips on them. |
Freddy is doing the same thing, he runs up the stairs and is scared to come down. ( i have to admit our stairs are pretty steep) He is 17 weeks. I have to carry him down all the way. I was playing with a beamer last weekend and he followed that little red dot down the stairs :) unfortunately he couldn't remember later on that he did it and was sitting on top crying for somebody. Yesterday i went down the stairs and was holding a toy for him to come...i knew exactly that he wanted to come and get it but was just too scared to go down the stairs...so i took him to the middle of the stairs and he ran down without a problem. It is not a big deal..i just want him to be able to go downstairs when he needs to go potty. |
Harley is almost 5 months old and he will run like the wind up the steps, but going down is another story. Yesterday we purchased some steps from Petsmart so he could get on and off the bed. Well he will climb up but will not go down! They might be a little narrow for him to feel safe so we are gonna return them. I guess I will just keep carrying him. |
It's the same with Zach. He will go up the stairs but not down. I thought it was because he was so small. On the other hand I have a Basset Hound that will not go down the stairs also. Her sister and littermate goes up and down all day but Chloe will sit at the top of the steps and cry. I guess it depends on the dog. |
My Phantom will go up the stairs, but not down. He is 10 lbs - and almost 3 years old (so size is obviously not the issue), but he is my big baby :) ... it's so funny because Sapphire (who is 4lbs) has been running up and down the stairs since she was about 8 weeks old. I have no explanation why Phantom will not go down - but he has his own little elevator - Mommy's arms :p. |
Dont ya know those stairs going up looks ok but they must look awful horrible coming down to a little dog...mine dont' like going up or down the stairs. |
Dogs have to be taught stairs as puppies or they can be fearful as adults We taught Teddy the stairs right away but we never let him go down the full staircase by himself when he was really little. We would start like 4-5 steps up and we would coax him down with chicken. I noticed when Daisy had a slip on the stairs, she became a little fearful last year and we realized her traction wasnt that great anymore on our wood so we had a runner installed and now she is back to running up and down. |
I wish Mabel was scared of the steps. She is 19 weeks and 2 1/2 pounds and doesn't hesitate. She has been doing this since we got her home at 12 weeks - sigh... |
stairs it takes time i wouldn't rush it then they will be all over the place i have 2 14wks males and they will go up the stairs and sometimes if they go up 2 with come down those 2 but not all the time..i lift them down..i think they like the attention...before you know it they'll be doing it on there own.. |
I am with Trin7. I have a small set of stairs so they can get up on the couch. Unless I leash him and keep him close, My little boy does a leap off the couch OVER the stairs to the floor. Gives me a heart failure. Thankfully he uses the stairs most of the time but when he is playing with the otheres and gets too excited he THINKS he can fly. |
