Too late to cut tail?? Hello everyone! I just bought a little yorkie girl yesterday. She is super adorable but she has a long tail. I personally prefer the cut tail look so was wondering: When is it too late to cut a yorkies tail? |
It is to late now. 5 days old would be the oldest I would crop the tail. |
I can't imagine that would be a very comfortable procedure for her- not to mention she might wonder where her tail went. |
Wow it's definitely too late. She is 8 weeks old. Guess I'll have to get used to it. |
1 Attachment(s) I honestly think that after 4 days it is cruel to dock a puppy's tail. I don't believe that you should dock because you prefer the look. Love her the way she is and leave it long. I have one with and one without and I honestly wish they both hadn't been docked. |
Look at it this way: you'll always know when she's happy!:D Docking isn't allowed in Europe. OK. You said her. Do you have two yorkies? |
i have 2 that have long tails and 2 that have short tails i like them either way i will send a picture of mikey who is 4 years old with his tail he is pretty cute |
Aww. Yes, it's much too late to dock her tail. My little boy has a docked tail, but I'd love for him to have his full tail. Tails are so expressive, and every time I see his nub wagging, I just can't help but wish he had his tail! I'm sure you will come to love her tail - I think full-tailed Yorkies are beautiful! |
Far too late, the docking of tails should be done in the first few days of life. Poppy has her long tail as docking is banned here in England, I love it. :) |
awe :( tails are so adorable, leave it be. It would be far too painful to have it docked now anyway. Rizzo has his and I love it :D |
I wish to heck they would ban tail docking here. I don't buy the theory that it doesn't hurt it they are less than 5 days old: after all, it's an amputation of bone. The medical community used to think that preemies couldn't feel pain either because they didn't always cry when they had procedures done- thankfully we now know that there are other signs of pain/distress besides crying and we've come a long way in pain management for them. |
Charlie has his tail and Natalie's is docked. Charlie is much more expressive with his tail than Natalie is. I love it! |

I have 3 without tails and 1 with. She is my "tailie girl" Your baby is adorable!!! |
Long tail, short tail, ears up, ears down. Who cares, they're still our babies and we just love them:) |
I agree with all of you. This is my second yorkie. My other one has his tail docked thats why I wanted her to have a short tail but she looks super cute with it too. After hearing how many of you have yorkies with both long and short tails I feel much better. Thanks for all your responses. |
i personally think that they should all keep their tails!!! i love the long tail and would hope the next one i get has a tail. Dogs in general use their tail a lot for communication and a docked tail makes it more difficult for them to be ale to communicate with eachother. it's like the equivillent of a minor learning disability for humans! |
Is that Yogi in your avatar? He's really cute!:p |
Yea thats him!! Thank You!! |
AHHHH I'm so jealous!!! I want my Schmuckie to have his tail ... mean mean breeders docked it. My Ella bear has her tail and it makes me bonkers she's soooooo cute with it!! |
Some vets will take the tail much later but those are few and far between. Plus its SUPER expensive. They get put under. Some will do it when they get fixed other do it when they get their teeth cleaned but it just seem soooo cruel. By that point in time they know they have a tail. |

I wouldn't want to put my new baby through that. I'll love her just the way she is:D |
I would think that amputating a tail on an older puppy or dog would be extremely painful! The nerves have matured - and the after effect would be similar to amputating any limb. :( |
I love the natural tails! I'm betting you are going to get a lot of comments from people about it. You might want to get her a t-shirt to go in that says "It's a Natural Tail" or "My Tail is Natural" :grin2: |
I know people that have imported yorkies from overseas and have had their tails docked once they came in and they were older. To show the dogs in AKC they had too - it wasn't an option. I don't know how the dogs did with the recovery though or if it was hard to find a vet that did it or not. |

My opinion is that it is EXTREMELY cruel to amputate their tail!! I cannot imagine doing this to an almost full grown Yorkie....no matter what the reason is! I can't speak for the dog, but I can speak from personal experience and when you have severe trauma to a main nerve(s) they are permanently damaged and, with me, VERY sensitive to even light touch. It's not fun and it even makes me jumpy and paranoid when someone is close to that particular spot....I imagine a Yorkie would feel the same way.....pain associated with touch. :( I wish those that have Yorkies with full tails would love them just the way they are!! :( |
