Fence Fighting I've been really fortunate not to have dogs living next door to me for a couple of years now.....However, my neighbor's divorced daughter just moved in w/a small'ish adult dog and a boxer about 8-10 months old...I have tried and tried to stop them from fence fighting, to no avail :(...I want to be a responsible pet owner (I live in a neighborhood), but I also want to let my pups run in and out, during the day, when the weather is so nice, and I'm home...There's a 6 1/2' redwood fence, so they can't really see each other, but they sure bark at each other, hysterically...Anyone have any suggestions how to remedy this? |
I hope someone can give you some ideas. That isn't a situation I've ever had to deal with - luckily. |
Well, I share your pain. We moved next door to two big dogs; one a GSD. I thought if I left a little space between the boards (as in not a privacy fence) that the 4 dogs would get used to each other. Sometimes with a privacy fence - I thought that everything was a mystery to Ringo because he couldn't see it. Here's what I learned. Seeing the other dogs sure doesn't make it better! Only this time - Lucy is the instigator. She's always running over there and getting things started. I anxious to see if anyone has any advice! |
Well I sure am not any help. We have two daschunds that live behind me. I have a privacy fence except for the back row where there is a chain link. Those neighbors were going to put in a privacy fence so I never did. Well they ended up not doing it either. My boys and their 2 boys love love love love chasing each other along the fence line, barkin like crazy and trying to eat other thru the fence. This goes on for about 15 minutes each time everyone is out at the same time. Then they are done and go about their own business. Hopefully someone can give ya some ideas. |
Not sure if this will work for you but we put up a secondary fence alongside the chain link fence we share with our one neighbor - now there is a 2-3 foot area between the fences. So our neighbor's dog has 'his' fence and our babies have 'their' fence. Occasionally they will let out a bark or two when they first see each other in the mornings but mostly they just watch each other through the double fences:D BTW, the secondary fence is not a big fancy fence. We made it out of a roll of 4' high garden fencing and stakes - pretty easy to put up. |
our yard is "boxed" in with a privacy fence on all 4 sides, but the first thing Cooper does is run the perimeter of the yard, barking hysterically, so the kids on the right, and the dog and kids on the left, can know he is in his yard. Gotta love it when you hear a "Shut UP Cooper!" from one of the neighbor kids, before I get the chance to say it--LOL |

I have the exact same thing going on in my back yard too. Luckily I only have one side to deal with, but it is the longest side. It is frustrating too because they have a big dog, not agressive, just big, lonely, and bored, but they don't have to worry about injury to her if somehting was to happen based on size alone so they don't really work with her on the issue. She digs under the fence and when her nose meets my dogs' noses there is a lot of barking and fence running. At that point I usually just call my dogs in. I don't need them hurting themselves because when they get all worked up like that they don't really think well. |

In my old neighborhood, the neighbors in back of us (but way up on a hill looking down on our backyard) would always greet Ringo when he was charging around the yard. |

This is my favorite Cooper picture, I think it shows how inquisitive he is! |

I don't let him bark for long, if it irritates me, I am sure it can infuriate the neighbors. He stands by the back door and cries and cries like he has to potty, when we open the door, he runs his lap, barking all the way, and comes back  |
Have they met? Would that alleviate it at all? Our neighbors one one side are great (they're only one of two people I let watch my dogs) and whenenver they're out in their yard mine go nuts until I lift them up to see it's tem and they pet them and they're fine after that. Anyone else, not so much:rolleyes: |

Cooper is cute as a button and he does have a little 'ornery' look to him! So sweet! I don't let the barking go on too long either. Or at least I try not to. I'm one of those people that can tune out any noise so I have to stay focused and not leave them out too long! |

As onery as he is, he is a cuddle bug indoors, he sleeps on a pillow in between me and my husband, as close as he can get! I say he is mommy's baby, and best friend rolled in to one! Quote:

Aww, I feel like Cooper and Buzz and my Levi should all be best friends and they can just run around and bark together. My Levi is a wild man too! haha |
