When I bought Wobie's petplan insurance last week, I hadn't heard anything negative about petplan, especially on YT...this is a little disheartening. While I kind of understand Petplan's reasoning here, they do advertise as being a company with the most coverage. Has anyone else had bad experiences with them? |

Submitted: Monday, November 19, 2007 Last posting: Monday, December 14, 2009 At first the sales reps. seem so friendly, accommodating, and concerned. But as soon as you start questioning important issues they’re no where to be found. I got a policy for my cat from them and I discussed all my concerns over the phone with them for hours and believed that I had reached an agreement with them. Two weeks later when I finally got all the documents in the mail, the contract looked nothing like I had discussed with them before. Out of honesty I had told them that my cat had a urinary tract infection a while ago and I specifically asked if this is going to be treated as a pre-existing condition in which case there will be no coverage for urinary tract infection at any point during my cats life. The rep insured me that urinary tract infection is quite common among male cats and is not considered a pre existing condition. Then he explained to me that a pre-existing condition includes illnesses such as cancer or diabetes which are long term conditions that are not curable. Then I asked so if my cat gets sick with urinary tract infection a month from now will it be covered? And he assured me that it would. Once I got the contract, urinary tract infection was listed under a pre-existing condition which I had agreed to apparently. I called Petplan five times and no one even bothered to call me back. Finally when I called to cancel, the supervisor attempted to resolve the issue. I told him that my conversation with their rep was recorded and he can easily find the recording and see that what I had agreed to is not on the contract. He said that he had listened to the recording and I was right but the rep didnt know all the details and hes new and therefore it was just a mistake on his part. When I asked him to remove the pre existing condition he refused to do it and said call again in six months and if your can hadnt had a urinary tract infection by then maybe we review your case again. Six months! So many things could happen in six months I said. He said theres nothing else he could do. I warn you, if you want to get pet insurance DO NOT buy it from Petplan. What theyre doing is illegal. The contracts that they provide are false and unilateral. They said it takes twenty days before I can make any claims. Even though I cancelled before the twenty day trial theyre still going to charge me. Theyre thieves who dont run an honest business. Sunny Toronto, Ontario Canada |

Petplan Defrauds Customers, Leaves Pets Unprotected PetPlan Complaint by Csilvagni You were reading a complaint about PetPlan. Filing a new complaint about I purchased my PetPlan dog plan on June 9, 2009, pre-paid for quarterly coverage and was charged after the 24 hour hold on June 10, 2009. A few weeks later Brewster began experiencing urinary issues, so on June 24 I took her to our local vet. Thus, it is important to note that the vet visit was after the two week waiting period. It was simply coincidental that the vet visit was on the day after the plan went into effect. The vet diagnosed Brewster with a mild bladder infection and prescribed some meds. Given the fee was only $70 we didn’t bother submitting it to PetPlan. After two weeks, Brewster still wasn’t well so we returned to the vet, who issued a different prescription. After another three weeks, she still wasn’t improving, so we returned to the vet who advised we begin costly testing. After checking with PetPlan, who told me specifically the procedures were covered, we moved forward with the testing to determine what was wrong. The tests ultimately showed Brewster had a stone in her bladder that had to be surgically removed. At this point we had spent around $800 with the surgery estimated to cost more than $1000. We submitted a claim for the $800 for the initial fees incurred, and I again called and spoke with PetPlan to confirm the next surgical procedure would be covered. Brewster went into surgery on August 31 at 7 a.m. When I got home from work, I received a letter from PetPlan saying that they were denying my claim and subsequently would not be covering the surgery we had performed today. I then called PetPlan immediately and was informed that they were considering it a pre-existing condition – because even though I enrolled on June 9 and paid the same day, my plan “mysteriously” was not activated until June 15, which meant the first vet visit occurred during the two week wait period. However, I did open my plan on June 9, technically in effect on June 10 due to the 24 hour hold, which would mean the June 24 vet visit would fall after the wait period had ended. I did not enroll and pay for a service and then knowingly consent to the plan not being activated for five additional days. At this point, we have not received any further response/communication/resolution from PetPlan and are currently responsible for nearly $2,000 in vet fees, despite Pet Plan incorrectly activating our plan five days after we enrolled and paid in full. My dog means the world to me, which is why I was so thorough in my plan selection. Working in the insurance industry, I know how insurance companies work and often wrongly deny claims, which I fear is the case in my situation. I am glad my dog has now received the proper course of treatment, but there is still a large vet bill that needs to be resolved. We choose PetPlan to be protected, not defrauded. Don’t choose PetPlan! |
Anna Banana, thanks for posting those for me. October 1 is my annual renewal with Embrace Pet Insurance, so I just switched some of my gang from Embrace to Petplan earlier this week. I've always felt very comfortable with Embrace (I've never had to file a claim, thank God) and see nothing but satisfied customer reviews on them. This thread popped up at just the right time for me - I need to do a lot more thinking before I make a change in insurances. I'll be sticking with Embrace for at least another year. |
:confused:Now I am freaking out about Petplan- I have it and am worried I may have picked the wrong plan- I don't know- I am confused and will have to really research. I thought i picked the right plan?! |
Shouldn't they have told you they needed a vet's exam records to begin your coverage?!?! There is no way, records or not, that fire aunts are pre-existing...grr!!! |
I started looking at insurance policies today -- got an automated quote from Petplan. I thought the price was reasonable, but one thing I don't like is that I can't find a way to see the actual policy. How can you buy a product without knowing exactly what's in it? |
So sorry for the aggravation you went through, but thanks for posting this...I'm looking into insurance right now for Rocco. I was actually leaning toward Trupanion, based on reviews I've read and what seems to be excellent coverage. But then after your experience, I guess they may not all be as they seem. God, I hate insurance companies of any kind!!! |
I would be seriously angry too! Saying that fire ants are a pre-existing condition is utterly ridiculous! I've also considered insurance for my two yorkies, but I think I'm going to start a savings account for them instead. The situation with pet insurance sounds similar to what some health insurance companies do and I seriously don't want to struggle to get money for my dogs when they need it. I hope you find a solution for your situation :) |

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance | BBB Review | Bellevue, WA Is that the same Healthy Paws from the petinsurancereview website? It seems like more and more pet insurance companies are popping up. |
Yes, this is the one with the next best pricing and similar policy to Petplan. Who knows, I'm just hoping they have a little common sense and know what's right and what's wrong when it comes to a stuation like mine, time will tell. Their B+ rating is nothing more than no history at this point. |
