12week old Puppy going out in the rain I am worried about my 2lb 12week old puppy going outside in the rain because she will get wet and i dont want her to become ill? I want to know if you take your puppies out in light rain? The problem is where i live is always raining and if i didnt take her out in the rain she would never get walked. Also its sooo cold here in North England (Northumberland) its 7C here at the moment and this is in September, its REALLY really cold. Poppy will still be ok to go out when it is this cold right? I have a little jumper i got off Rachel X (thanks rachel) that i put on her but she still shivers. Any advice please? xxxx |
22 people have looked at this and not replyed sob sob lol xxx |
I would put something on her when she goes out. Do you also have a rain coat you can put on over a sweater, so you can take her for little walks? She would be ok for a little while. That is not terribly cold. They are tougher than you think!:D |
Humm maybe i am colder than she is becuase i am freezing haha! I dont have a rain coat no but i will get one :D Thank you xxx |
I have an AKC rain coat that I've had for a long time. I don't have to use it very often, but it has four legs and fits together with velcro on the back. I like it because it keeps her tummy dry and most of her legs. Really, all that gets wet is her head and feet. It has a hood that velcroes on, too, but she doesn't like hoods at all. |
I dont usually take Poppy for walks when its raining (shes still too small for her rain coat) but she does go in the garden for potty in the rain. I just make sure I dry her when she comes in and that I keep her warm. But then again my Poppy is a little chubster at 5lbs already! (she will be 19weeks on friday) so maybe all that fat keeps her warm LOL just kidding. But I think as long as you have a jumper or a rain coat on her while shes out, and make sure she isnt out for long periods of time then dry her when she comes in she should be fine. |
I live in Florida. To me that would be REALLY REALLY cold. However mine do go out when it is a light rain. Otherwise I would go deaf with their cries to go potty. ;) I agree with above. Just put a rain coat on over her jumper and she will be set. |
She will be okay in the rain. You do need to make sure she stays warm enough - sweater and raincoat, or heavier, water-repellent coat. Walking helps generate body heat. When you get her inside, dry her thoroughly and make sure she doesn't catch a chill. But dogs need to walk! It's what they do. If they don't walk and let their energy out, their energy will come out some other way. |
I take mine out when it is just sprinkling. A little more than that I might take an umbrella and hold it over both of us. But if it is raining intensely, we stay inside. I take a towel to them when we get in since they get wet even with the evening and morning dew. They won't get sick just with a little rain or even a little cold. All things in moderation. |
i think with her being so young still, i wouldn't, my vet told me that if they have at least 3 sets of there shots they should be ok going out. |
I would wait until she is older. When I had Penni and Tuppence they used to love playing in the back yard in the snow! They always looked like they had little white boots on. I have some pics taken back then, if they will scan OK (they are 20 years old) I will post them in the pics section. |
Heyyya, I am not too far from you as I am in Scotland and I take Robbo out in the rain and have done since he was 0.8kg as it always rains here lol. At first he hated it as he did not know how to dry himself so used to stand and shover and wait for me to towel dry him but not he has worked out how to give a wee shake he is fine, infact he loves playing in the rain. I found the key is to keep him really active if I take him out to play in the rain as when he is walking he gets cold and shivers but if he has his ball and runs he loves it. Hope all is well. How far are you from the border? I am just across in Edinburgh! |
In Canada where I live it gets to be -20 C, although we go to Florida for the winter I have a daughter with a yorkie poo and a yorkie and they go out potty in the winter... Kacee when I first got him went out side to potty in rain or snow when he was this size.. Now it was not for a long time just pretty much to go potty.. at this size and age there is not a must to take for a long walk.. but to take outside long enough to potty.. save the walking for warmer weather.,,, |
As long as she has all her shots she should be good to go out. Like everyone seems to be saying if it's that cold you can keep a sweater on her (is that what a jumper is? lol) and put a raincoat over it and take off when you get in. |
My husband made a little "pen" out of plastic lattice...it measures about 3 x 3 x 3 (hinged together, so it's collapsable and portable!!) ...this is where we take Pippin to do her business. She knows what she's supposed to do there...and is done promptly regardless of the weather. When it's raining we use a golf umbrella to hold over the pen and she stays nice and dry!! Works for us!!!! |
