What to do during a cold winter? My 8 month old Yorkie thinks September is cold, she shivers when I take her outside in a sweater and it is still in the 60's. Any suggestions? I'd like to get her a heating pad to sleep on during the day. Thanks!! |
ours wear fleece pajamas! |
I keep a cute little sweater dress on Lucy in the winter; even in the house. She seems to really like it when the weather is cool. She hates to be dressed when it's hot outside and so I don't. I will normally walk my Westie in much colder weather than I will walk Lucy. She just does not enjoy the cold and snow like Ringo does. |
dunno about heating pads, they can burn. try tshirts, hoodies and sweaters. Target starts putting more doggie things in their $1 bin about now, check that out. Could your pup be just nervous about being outdoors and not really cold? |
cold ? Maybe a sweater and a jacket ? Sorry to ask, but is it possible that maybe something outside is scaring her, upsetting her or making her nervous, and that is why she is shivering ? Do you scoop her up and take her outside and set her down ? I know sometimes when I take Gracie outside for a walk, she shivers a bit, then gets over it after a bit. Just a thought. |
This will be my little yorkies first winter. I plan to make her some flannel PJ's and make her a few fleece coats to wear when I take Princess outside to go potty. I think the heating pad under a fleece blanket is a great idea to use as long as they are supervised. I am hoping she will enjoy playing in the snow this winter. I know Princess will not tolerate being outside in the cold or snow for more than a few minutes. |

It could be that temperature regulator is still immature at this point. If you've had an overload of hot weather this summer like most of us, 60 deg could feel kinda chilly to her. She's still young. I'd keep up with the sweater as long as she's shivering. Her body will probably toughen up as weather gets colder. Hope she likes clothes as much as Roxy! :) Welcome to YT! PS: Get her a warm coat for winter. Roxy wears t-shirts all winter in addition to a coat. Has fleece jammies at night. |
Rizzo also isn't a fan of the now cooler weather, at least not in the early morning or evening, he really enjoys it in the middle of the day, he can run and run and not get super hot! :D But, something I'd like to know is what about during the day time when I'm at work? I've noticed my house finally cooling off from the summer, but unfortunatly this means that my house is once again going to get so cold it'll be like living in a refridgerator. I made it through last year by wearing mucklucks, sweats (both sweater and pants), and bundling up in a blanket...going to get Rizzo a few pairs of jammies and some doggy slippers, but can he wear these items when I'm not at home? I'd say no to the slippers, as he'd probably get bored and tear them off and chew them up, but are the jammies fine to leave on all day? There is no risk of overheating in my house during the winter, especially with his alone time being spent in the kitchen. I don't have central heat, and as I discovered last year, I can't get my radiators to work unless I'm running hot water at the same time ...I had thought a heating pad might be a good idea, but then again, I've discovered that Rizzo likes to chew cords when alone and I won't take that risk.... |
We have the heating on full blast in the house at the moment, its like being on a tropical beach LOL :D But when I take Poppy outside in this weather I make sure she has a jumper or a coat on, and I make sure she isnt out in the cold for too long. |
First of all Welcome to YT!!. As some of the others have said she could just be nervous. Put a sweater or coat on her if may calm her down. |
Welcome. Ally gets cold easy too. We try not to spend too much time outside when 'she' thinks it's cold and I keep sweaters on her at all times. She comes out of her little pj's at night, so she wears t-shirts to bed. She does have a jacket to put on over her sweaters when we go out. Your weather is far colder than mine, so good luck. |
Piper is the same way, cold and it is in the 60s. I just have her were sweaters and coats. Or you can get a hairy German shepherd so your dog can snuggle in the tail like Piper :) |
Mine likes to play in the snow! |
Charlie loves to be outside in the cold weather but Natalie shivers when I take her out too. I have to put a sweater on her and she is fine. |
This will be Zach's first winter and I'm not sure how he will react. I have plenty of sweaters and coats for him. |
