My puppy's Size I have a 4 month old yorkie female who weighs 4lbs. I don't care how large she gets I just wonder if she is normal. Her mother is 5 pounds and the father is 8 pounds. She has been to the vet and he says she is ok, But i just wanted another opinion considering my other 2 yorkies (her parents) were so much smaller at her age, even the father who is 8 pounds now at 3 years old! |

I think she will be well over the breed standard. Here are a couple puppy growth charts and you can see she is already off the charts: Yorkshire Terrier - Yorkie Puppy Growth/Weight Chart - watch us grow YorkieInfoCenter | Yorkshire Terrier Growth Chart I would guesstimate she will be close to the sire's size. Since the parents are also your dogs, you may want to reconsider breeding them. I say this for breed standard but more so for safety of your female. It is not recommended to breed a larger male to a smaller female. If she should have a very large litter of larger pups, it could be dangerous for her. 5-6 pounds is a nice size for a breeding female, but you really should look for a male that is smaller than the female before breeding again. |
My yorkies were not ment to be bred the boy has since been fixed to avoid that from happing again. I just wanted to get some opinions on her size. Thanks for your advice!! :o) |
Also she was only 4 ounces at birth so i just don't get it according to the charts!! |
I think it is quite normal. Puppies tend to eat a lot more then an adult and the puppy food has a lot more fats for growth. I have two babies, Star is now 2 years old and at 4 months she weights 4 lbs. Her parents were only 4 and 5 lbs so I also thought it was odd that she weighed so much. But now she is slimmed down and weighs 5 lbs. Preston is 3 months and weighs 3 lbs right now. His parents also weight 4 and 5 lbs. Sometimes it could be the time you weighed them. If you weighed them right after eating then you will notice a big difference then if you did it right when they woke up in the morning. |
Thank you so much I was looking for someone who had been thru it already, My other 2 yorkies were small and grew later on! But she seems to be growing right away. Also I love your Yorkie's name being I have a Preston too!! |
Zoe has gained a pound for every month. She's now 6 months and weighed 6 lbs at last weighing when she turned 6 mo. Her parents are 6 and 7 lbs. So i suspect she'll be a little teapot. |
my Thomas was about 4 pounds at four months..he is now 15 pounds. we were told he wouldn't get very big..;) |
Some puppies seem to grow off very quickly and then stop, I have a little girl that was a big puppy she now is 4 lb at 2 years old and spoiled rotten :D |

Was she a singleton??? If so, they do start off a little chunkier. My 11 week old baby was a chunker at birth she weighed 5.5oz. I thought she was going to be huge!!! But as the weeks have rolled by she is now only 1lb 9oz. And is charting to be about 3.5lbs, when she was off the charts in the beginning weeks. So you never know!!! |
