New addition..not a yorkie...
 

Ok, so my dh has been thinking about getting a dog for a while, I am a little concerned because he has mostly been a cat person. But we of all things adopted a chow puppy Saturday, now in all seriousness it is adorbale now, and super well behaved, and hasnt had any accidents in the house yet, and is doing great with Roxie. But....I am concerned when this dog gets older, I dont want to sterotype any dog, but we all know that chows can be a handful. This is the most gorgeous puppy, seriously, (besides my Roxie) I have EVER seen, and she seems to have the BEST personality. I have never owned a Chow before, I have done research, but thats nothing compared to the real thing...lol...Can anyone give me any good advice on this dog and Roxie has she gets older. Oh and this dog is a female, and her name is Ching Ching a.k.a. CC...And she is a blue fawnish color? I will post pics when I get home.. Thanks!

Congratulations on your new girl! She sounds so adorable...all I could think of is a ball of fluff! LOL!! As far as what to do to make sure things go smoothly...I would feed Roxie first, she goes outside first, she gets treats first. (I had gotten a Boxer pup and did the same thing with my Yorkie to keep, for lack of a better word, alpha.) Sort of like keeping the "pack" in its order. You and your husband, then Roxie and then CC.

She honestly is the most precious puppy ever. I was amazed, she slept with my daughter Saturday night, and all I could think was this is gonna be a disaster, I am telling you the dog slept right next to her, no whining, and belive it or not no accidents, now I did get up a couple of times during the night and I had to wake her up to take her out. I guess that just amazes me that she is so well behaved...lol..I did keep her in the crate last night, because I want her to be used to that as well..I will try and post pictures soon..

Chow Chow's are gorgeous! I know they must be socialized heavily while young to avoid problems when older. I think she will be fine with Roxie since they are growing up together! :) But they definitely need more firm and consistent training than most dogs. I would be sure to take her to training classes while she's still young. They can also be sensitive to really hot weather.

Thanks so much for the link and everyones advice! She will definitely be an indoor dog only, and when we take her out when its hot it will only be for short periods. Thanks again everyone!

Chows are definitely a strong willed and dominant breed. So i hope you are up for the challenge. Make sure she is VERY well socialized as soon as possible with all different people, children, dogs, and any other animal you think she'll be around. By different people I mean men, women, young, old, all different ethnicity and skin colors, people wearing uniforms, hats, sunglasses, heavy coats, scarves, etc... Take her to puppy classes and obedience classes as soon as she's able as well. Technically this should be done with all dogs but its even more important with a powerful breed known for aggression. I am the last person to stereotype a dog because i strongly believe aggressive dogs come from uninformed/unwilling owners. However, in all my years of working with dogs (animal shelters, vet tech, groomer) I can count the number of well-balanced chows on one hand. Most were aggressive in some way or another because the owners never took the time to properly train and socialize them.

From what you've said so far she sounds like a great puppy, can't wait to see pictures. I've seen some fabulous chows on animal planet dogs 101 i think and they were a dream come true in the vet and groomer world. LOL

Oh, and i agree with the grooming advice. Brush and comb her as often as possible, preferably a few times a week. You need to make sure you are brushing the whole coat all the way down to the skin and not just the top coat. You should be able to part the hair and see the skin She is going to have a lot of coat to take care of. You'll need at least a good slicker brush and greyhound comb. Other tools i recommend are a long pin undercoat rake, a long pin pin brush (love the chris christensan ones), mat breaker, and a conditioning/detangling spray (Ice on Ice, The Stuff, Quicker Slicker, etc) to spray on before brushing and demating. Handle her feet, nails, ears, mouth, tail, etc... as often as possible so other people are able to touch them when necessary. I also recommend taking her to a professional groomer once a month as soon as she has all her shots. I say this because there are MANY groomers that will refuse to do chows. So i suggest finding a good one while she is a baby. Stay with that one groomer and go once a month so the groomer is able to build a working relationship with the pup and the pup will allow the groomer to do anything that needs to be done without a fuss
