House breaking I have a 14 week old yorkie and am having problems with his training to use indoor puppy potty patch. He will sometimes use the patch to urinate but he refuses to poop on it. we caught him several times pooping somewhere else and takes him straight to the potty patch and he still doesnt seem to get it. We use the crate system when we are not home but since my boyfriend works at home hes here all the time so I don't see the need to have him crated when we or one of us is home. our other dog was trained this same way and we have no problems with him at all. our yorkie sleeps with me in the bed during the day sue to me working third shift and instead of whining to get down to use the bath room as of today he went on the bed! I tried crateing him when I was in bed asleep but he whined and barked for 4 hours !!! and I got no sleep on several occations. I know that he will eventually get used to the crate like my other dogs did but holy cow, This yorkie is stubborn!! please any advice would be a great help!! |
Patients, be consistent, time and more patients... Yorkies are harder sometimes because they are small. 4 months is still a baby. Some take up to a year to train. Just hang in there. |
To be totally honest, it took me 8 months before my little girl was totally housebroken - and she is - 100% trained to go on the pee pads in the laundry room area. We have a little guy now who is 8 months and found that he is a little tougher. When I feel like he has gotten it - he'll leave me with a little surprise. Its harder for me to crate train because I have the one out and I feel its not fair to have the other one crated. I do keep them in the laundry room area at night and when we go out, but when we are at home, I have a gate up so they won't go into the other areas of the house where I won't see them. You really have to be on top of them at all times and catch them doing it in the right place. For me, treats have helped tremendously. I use the little tiny goldfishes as treats (my kids love them - so they are always in the house), but have heard that cheerios work well also. Good luck! |
