Any advice? I just got 2 Yorkie(sister) puppies? I am new to this forum and new Yorkie parents to 2 ten week old females named Molly and Maggie. We only were suppose to come home with 1 puppy but before we knew it ,we had 2 puppies! I was horrified when I read an article about how bad it was to raise two sibling pups together. The article said that it was a bad idea and not to do it. I realize that people have different experiences raising puppies, but is it really that bad? Any information that you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Molly and Maggie share a crate, is this is a good idea? Any tips on housebreaking would be greatly appreciated as well. I have raised two girls together before and it was actually better for me. They would keep each other busy when I was worn out and I just made sure that I gave them one on one attention. Like I would do seperate walks so that they would walk well on a leash. |
Welcome to YT and congratulations on your new girls! Have you ever heard the saying 'don't believe everything you read'? Well, I'm here to tell you that's true! I have sisters, full litter mates, and I have had no trouble with my girls at all. House training was no worse than with just one...bedtime was a breeze (most nights) because they had each other to snuggle with and I didn't worry about one of them getting lonely when I was gone. My girls turned 3 yesterday and I wouldn't seperate them for the world...they love each other and depend on each other...and, contrary to popular belief...they didn't bond with each other and not us...they are the most loving, wonderful girls I could ever ask for! Your names are similar to ours...I also had the third sister from their litter but she now lives with my sister...her name is Molly and my 2 girls are Megan (Moo-Moo) and Maddie Jo. Good luck with your girls...you're in for some fun now! |
Thanks for the quick replies!! We thought it was extreme! I just could not believe that it was that bad to have two puppies. I know it will be trying at times but thats okay. Our thinking was it would be better to have two... Always there to have companionship with each other when we could not be home. As for my question about them sharing a crate at 10 weeks old is that a good idea? They love to snuggle with each other as they should, they are sisters. Thanks again for your help! We are having alot of fun! :animal36 |
We didn't use a crate for bedtime...we used a puppy playpen with their bed, food & water and a potty pad. We crate trained them during the day so they would be used to a crate if it was needed though. Also, one thing to keep in mind is their temperment...everything can be going great until hormones kick in. If you are not planning to breed I would get them spayed before their first heat. My girls have never had a problem with each other but some have when heats come around. |
sisters I am also a mom to 2 little mate sisiters. I was suppose to get 1, Sadie, but her big sister, Jackie, looked up at me with those brown eyes like to say Your taking my sister away. So it took about 2 seconds to ask how much for her? It was the best thing I ever did. They love each other, Sleep with each other and total depend on each other. When they were babies I let them sleep with me in our bed. If we leave they had each other. They are now 3.5 yrs old. I can say I never ever regretted getting two. I would highly recommend it to everyone. I can say to Jackie were is Sadie and she will walk around looking for her. I have 6 total and Jackie and Sadie will always be together. Enjoy your new addition. |
Let's See Them! I hope you'll post pics of them together soon; I for one can't wait to see them!:aimeeyork |
I had never read anything negative about raising siblings. I think it is great if a person can raise two together. That way they always have someone for company. They do tend to fight for attention a bit but as long as you do give each their due one-on-one time, I can't imagine why it would be bad. |
Welcome to YT. I doubt you'll have any problems. I have no experience raising siblings. I, too, have read that they bond with one another, but like she said, don't believe everything you read. I'm sure it will be very nice for you. In fact, I wish I had brought home siblings. I've read some nightmares about trying to get one and then later getting another, so I think you'll be just fine!:) |

Welcome to Yorkie Talk and the wonderful world of being owned by a yorkie:) I don't have experience raising more than 1 yorkie. I do wish I had. They are such a wonderful breed. They will melt your heart and have you wrapped around their little paws in no time.:) Can't wait to see pictures. |
I have 2 sisters Morkies that are 17 months old now, and I have to say having siblings has been PURE JOY! I have never regretted for one minute getting both and I would do it again in a heartbeat. They are so cute together, and even though they have a very close bond, both are equally bonded to me and somewhat independent in their personalities. I also have another Morkie and a Yorkie close in age (2 1/2), and they have had a bit of adjusting but get along great. All 4 girls are wonderful together. Don't get scared by other opinions and theories.... just love and enjoy the little darlings, and it will be ok. |
Welcome to YT MPO is that it is better for everyone to have 2 and siblings have worked great for me :) |
Hi and welcome to YT, also I would like to congratulate you on your new babies :) I have never heard that about raising to pups, Im sure it wont be anywhere near as bad as they have made out. Just make sure you give them both equal attention and Im sure everything will be fine, good luck. |
I have two Basset Hound sisters that were littermates. Like you I went for one and came home with two. They both share the same crate because when we tried to seperate them they cried all night. They love each other and it's twice the fun. |
