First off let me say WELCOME to YT. This site is amazing, its like the Virtual Bible for yorkies.
:)

I'm also in NY & looking for a yorkie. I was in almost the same situation you were in. I was going to buy a yorkie from a "breeder" in Cali....came to YT got some GREAT advice & left the breeder alone. I was looking for an older yorkie, but decided to wait until next summer to get a puppy. & I'm glad I made that decision, because now I have more time to research & get to know the breeder in interested in. So yeah don't rush into anything! Just like you wouldn't rush to have a baby with any-ol-body.....don't rush & get a yorkie from a stranger. Lol.

I also wanted to disagree on some comments that were made above. I was told the same thing " if you're on a budget then you CAN'T afford a yorkie". They don't know Crap about your finances but want to tell you what you can & can not get. Its perfectly understandable if you don't want to get an 1200-2500 dollar yorkie. & I must tell you, you CAN find reputable breeders that have puppies that are 800 & up. But from what I've noticed is that they're REALLY far away.....but if you don't mind traveling the distance...go for it. But like someone said earlier thoroughly check the breeder out 1st. There is a male puppy that is available right now in the wanted section that is 900 (if I'm not mistaken) & the members here rave over how beautiful the puppy is. & seems to know the breeder well too.

Once again it goes back to research......I've found a clean professional animal clinic that only charges $25 dollars a shot. A member here called "Wylie's mom" posted a thread about spay/neuturing certificates that you can get & you pay LESS than $100 for a spaying. (But you have to see if any clinics in your area accept theses certificates). The vet that I take my cat to did her spaying for FREE! & I love them they're location is convenient, they're connected to a ASPCA (that I want to volunteer at) & they're very affordable. If I ever have any problems with any of my animals.....I can literally RUN or take a 3 min bus ride there. So yeah, There are definately things out there that can work for you & most importantly your puppy. You just have to put in time ( a lot of time!! Lol ) and find them.

I think people are trying to be realistic and helpful in pointing out information that people may not be aware of. If I'm not mistaken you haven't had a Yorkie and I don't believe the OP has either, so people are just trying to share their experiences so everyone can be fully informed.
Can you get a Yorkie for $600-800, of course you can, but I was just pointing out to be very careful in researching the breeder. I don't know if that price range needs to be including shipping if they have to be shipped or not, etc..
I'm not sure if the dog you are referring to listed for $900 is the one that is an adult dog, but I pointed out an adult dog might be a good option.
Just lots of info to consider!
As frequently mentioned on YT, the initial price of the dog is quite often the least of the cost associated with a Yorkie, so it's important to take that into consideration.

1.) Nope never owned a yorkie....nowhere in my post did I claimed that I did.
2.) (I don't know how to post the link of the thread because I'm on my phone.) But the thread I was referring to was "Small Chunky Monkey Male" & to correct myself he's $800 & he's a little more than 12 weeks.
3.)noticed that I said I disagreed to SOME of the comments not all. & I also said "THOROUGHLY research the breeder"
4.) I also said if the OP wanted to TRAVEL the distance. Meaning if the OP wanted to meet these breeders or pick up the puppy in person. So no I'm not including shipping because PERSONALLY I wouldn't want my puppy shipped.
5.) & I agree with your last statement. Which applies to any other animal you own. I got my cat for free & we've paid thousand on her vet care, toys, litter, litter boxes, scratching posts, treats, catnip, couch repairs (because she tears up our couches). But Its common sense that animals care cost more than what u initially paid (or didn't pay ) for them. I'm pretty sure the breeder knows that since the owned a dog before. & Yes yorkies are the most expensive when it comes to their care that's y I suggested that they take their time & do their research. :)

I'm not attacking you. I was saying that since you and the OP haven't had a Yorkie that many of us who do are trying to share our experiences regarding their care and how expensive it can be compared to other breeds.
I think it's important to think about, especially if one is concerned about finances.

I am so glad you found YT. I know it would have saved me a bundle if I had learbed what I have since joining YT. I got Cali from a BYB and her vet bills were over 7,000.00 the first 8 months. I had had 3 previous yorkies and a pom over the years and still learned so much from here. Even after careful research these babies can cost a bundle in vet care. One of mine just had LP surgery at a cost of 2500.00 and she was from a reputable breeder. I would recommend you check into pet insurance or put a monthly amount away in a special savings just in case. Of course there are many who have only the normal vet expenses but you never know. Owning a yorkie is the best and doing the research like you are and being prepared for an emergency should it arise makes it even more enjoyable. I hope you find your perfect baby or adult!

@ Reese...yea I understand.

Be careful of who you purchase from . ask for photo id!! for sure. i learned that lessson for sure. see the pups in person do not ship and get to develop a relationship with who who purchase from. check the lemon laws in NY too. i am so lucky to have such healthy dogs and puppies to share my life with and others

It sounds like your first dog was not a Yorkie - that it was a larger breed - am I correct? Because we, too, had a Lab for 12+ years and we spent no where near the money on him as we have our Yorkies - and he was well taken care, too.

Many people have no idea just how expensive these little ones are - even healthy ones. I just took my Max (3 yrs old) to the vet yesterday. He had 3 teeth removed and one other tooth that had broken off but left the roots. (total 4) By the time we left yesterday it was $567! That was not including the $145 for shots, fecal and a couple of supplements last week. And this was just for Max.

And really, Max is a healthy, happy boy. We brush his teeth, he eats good natural treats, very little table scraps (bad hubby) and kibble. We're doing everything right - stuff just happens and I think that's why you'll see members bring the financial aspect up. Nothing personal. :)

Great post! People often really do not understand how much yorkies can end up costing!
