Hi everyone
I am looking to purchase a female yorkie and went to a breeder's home yestderday. Just wondering if this is what is meant by BYB.

She has a little house built outside that is surrounded by a wired fence, so they can go in and out of the little house. The fence is divided where there is only 2 adults pups per wired cage, but they all have access to a portion of the little house where they sleep and somehow it's set up where even if they go into the house, they can not get to each other's side. Does that make sense? She has about 8 adults and and 7 puppies.

Well, I wasn't comfortable with the fact that they are all kept outside even these 8-12 wk puppies although they are separated from the adults. And she told me about how she aquired one dog from a puppy mill. I was also looking at a very small female who's 8 wks and she was letting her leave at this age, plus she's estimating this pup to reach about 3 lbs. I don't want one that small and the fact that she lets her leave this early, made me uneasy. Who's to say her other dogs didn't come from a puppymill. So, needless to say, I'm not getting any from her. So, I'm still searching. Sorry this is long. Thanks for reading.

No way would a reputable breeder keep their dogs and pups anywhere but in their home. Or in wire cages! Will also never let them leave before 12 weeks! My opinion is this is a byb.

You have good instincts. She's got a setup intending to make money from these poor dogs, and she's obviously not concerned with their health history or lineage if she's acquiring breeders from puppy mills. :thumbdown

I am so glad I followed my gut instincts. I just don't understand how she thinks it's ok to keep dogs outside. The outside conditions were not great at all.

A reputable breeder would not keep their puppies in wire cages away from their home, buy from puppy mills, sell at 8 weeks! All red flags! :thumbdown:thumbdown

Have you checked YTCA.org for reputable breeders in your area?
It's so important to buy your breeder first!

yes, I did check ytca...no luck at this time.

Please carefully select a breeder. Yorkies are expensive and sick ones are even more expensive. I foolishly bought my first dog from a petstore and got the second one for free after they screwed up my "paperwork" and I threw a fit. Both these babies came from puppy mills in the midwest. I shudder to think of the first 8 weeks of their lives before they came home to me.

I went with a YTCA breeder for Teddy - a world of difference.

My puppymill dog Daisy has cost me tens of thousands of dollars in veterinary care over the years.

Your instincts gave you all the answers already. I'm glad you came here to have us support your already excellent judgment. Good luck in finding the right breeder for you and with getting your new little dog!

I agree. Bravo for following your instincts. I would call animal control and turn her in, but that's just me... I, personally, hate it when people leave their dogs outside. Not to mention in wire cages. Or small dogs. I think it's just 100% cruel.

I will be very selective when choosing a breeder because I really don't want to incur medical expenses at the expense of poor breeding, hence the reason, i didn't purchase this very cute little puppy. So sorry about your experience.

Sounds more like a small puppymill :thumbdown Glad that you followed your instincts and got away from there and quick. IMO a BYBer would at least keep their dogs inside their home and they would be part of their family. Still making money off them and breeding for the wrong reasons. In my mind a puppymill is exactly what you described. The woman's dogs are not even part of her family~just out in the backyard in an outbuilding breeding and making money. That is a puppymill!

Did you happen so see the undercover puppymill investigation on Animal Planet? Very eye opening. :(

I don't think you phrased it this way, but maybe you had the feeling that this just wasn't the kind of person you wanted to encourage to keep breeding dogs because of the crappy way she keeps the dogs and because they obviously aren't well loved pets too.

Anyway, we need more people like you - educated, responsible puppy buyers!

one of the hardest things i have ever had to do was walk away from a beautiful little baby girl puppy at a bad BYB...my instinct was to "save" her and get her out of there, but if we support these people by buying their dogs, we are supporting the animal abuse that is involved with BYB & puppymills.

Absolutely...i don't think she should continue, but she said she has been breeding for 8 yrs so I don't think she has plans to stop.

That is EXACTLY what I was thinking.
