New pup coming soon! Hi ALL! I am the proud momma:D of a yorkie :animal-pa in about 3 weeks :luvu: and i am just looking for some advice. whats the best food/shampoo for puppies. A lot of what I'm seeing is for puppies 8 weeks and older but the breeder I am getting mine from is allowing me to pick mine up at around 6 weeks. any help is def. appreciated. |
Welcome to Yorkietalk. I'm sure you'll get a lot of great information from experienced people - I didn't get my pups until they were 12 weeks old so don't have any suggestions regarding shampoo. As for food I feed my Darwin and Mabel Go! Natural as it has no fillers or corn. Orijen is another brand that is also really great. The food is a lot more expensive than Puppy Chow or some other store brand but Yorkies don't eat too much and it's definitely worth feeding a premium food. All I can offer is to make sure you get a harness instead of a collar as Yorkies have delicate tracheas and can be injured easily. I am using a ferret harness on my 17 week old Mabel as I couldn't find a dog harness that would fit her. Good luck and take care your little baby!:) |
is the pup eating on its own? that is quite young to be removed from its furmates and mom. The earliest, which is still too early, is eight weeks. Reputable breeder will not release untill 12 week. Pups typically dont even get a health cert, exam and first shots till 6 weeks. buyer beware! |
Sorry but I would go back on getting a yorkie from a breeder tht will let it go at 6 wks he has no clue of what he is doing. Your baby can get very sick if he gets tken from him mother that young. A baby should be going home at 12 wks not 6. Please dont take him hime that young. He still has lots to learn from mom and siblings. |
Welcome i know you cannot wait until you bring her home. i use John Paul Pet Tearless Gentle. if i were you i would not try to bring the pup home until it was 8 weeks old. Good Luck.. |

I completely agree with the above posters. If the breeder won't keep him until 12 weeks then you can find a much more reputable breeder. Puppies learn a great deal from their mothers in the 6-12 week age range and a lot of negative behaviors can result if they are taken from their mothers too young. Many people on here could steer you in the direction of a good breeder. I know you are very excited about getting him in 3 weeks but it's really not worth it to have a potentially sick puppy with behavior issues simply because the breeder didn't do what was right for the puppy. As far as shampoo I use EarthBath Puppy. A lot of people on here use MinkSheen and really love it. Food-wise I feed Acana and haven't been happier with any food. I LOVE it and so do the pups. :animal-pa Good luck with everything! |
I agree with the other posters. I would be concerned about the breeder you are purchasing from and the dogs they are breeding and selling if they let them go home at 6 weeks. That is way too young for Yorkies and it's illegal in some areas. As stated most puppies have not had first shots, there are health and behavioral concerns at that young of an age. Have you asked the breeder to keep the puppy until 12 weeks? |
6 weeks is to young to bring a puppy home. If she insist find another breeder. |
It is a class 3 misdemeanor in VA to sell a pup that young. The breeder needs reporting. |
Please, please, please don't bring this puppy home at only 6 weeks old! There are so many health risks, not to mention the behavioral problems she'll develop without her mother and litter mates around to train her. Please look around YT more, do some reading and research before you bring a new puppy home - there's a lot you need to be aware of to properly care for a yorkie puppy. Including the fact that yorkies need to be at least 12 weeks old before leaving their mom for a new home. |
My pups are going on 8 weeks and are still nursing from momma if that tells you anything. I know someone who went against advice and got a pup at 6 weeks and totally regrets it now. The pup is having potty training issues, showing agression towards other animals, bites really hard, darts as soon as the door opens, etc. |
:) thank you all THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH for advice and comments. :) everything is soooo appreciated.. i have read and researched very much and expressed my concerns to the breeder about the age of the pup so i will be delaying bringing her home for a few more weeks ! :animal-pa |
As most have said, reputable breeder don't release pups until around 12 weeks of age, and responsible owners won't accept anything otherwise. (Letting them go at 6 weeks is not even legal in many states.) So I'm glad that you are waiting longer. Hopefully the breeder will take note and rethink his/her practices. As for food, that depends. Check out the Health and Diet sections for reviews and a list of the brands most preferred by YT members. For a while, you should keep you little one on the food she is being fed by the breeder until she is fully acclimated to her new home. In the meantime, see what companies will send you samples and research what food you think will be best. Do some trial and error runs and most importantly, switch her food gradually and not cold turkey. Good luck and congrats! |
Congratulations on your new puppy! Misty is absolutely right. I'm getting my Tallulah next week and had a visit with our vet yesterday in preparation. He says not to change the puppy's food right away, even if it's grocery store cruddy food. The puppy will have enough stress just changing homes and getting used to new people without changing what goes into its delicate tummy. He also said not to feed table scraps -- none whatsoever. We talked about all the problems a Yorkie can have, and he says the most common two he sees are pancreatitis because of the rich people food overindulgent owners give and knee and back injuries from allowing the dog to jump off chairs, beds, etc, owners tripping over the puppy, and dogs being dropped. In fact, he told me to put a cat collar with a bell on her as soon as I get her so I can hear where she is. We also need to learn to do the "Yorkie Shuffle" so as not to step on her, and always know where she is when getting out of bed, closing the reclining chair, shutting doors and drawers, etc. He also warned me about letting other people pick her up. Like they even have a chance of getting their hands on my baby! |
