Dharma was pounced by a BIG dog So Dharma is going to puppy class at Petsmart and is doing beautifully. Last week we sat there for about half an hour while the instructor talked about nutrition. Dharma started shaking. The instructor told us it was probably because she is hearing all of the other things around her instead of concentrating on sit/stay/so on. Well tonight she graduated!!! We went up to accept her certificate and bone. When we got back to our 'spot' another big 'wild' puppy pounced Dharma. She shrieked and was yelling as my fiance grabbed the other dog off of her so I could grab her.....while the dog's owner just stood there. She is fine and ate a whole treat after. She was running around chasing us so nothing was wrong. I'm just afraid of the mental part. Is there anything we can do so she is comfortable around other dogs? We are planning to go back to other puppy classes so she can interact with more dogs. I just hope she doesn't associate the class/space with that incident. Any thoughts? |
I would take her back there during other hours and let her walk the same area when it's "safe" complete with lots of treats and praise. The bigger trick is going to be keeping you from tensing up every time you see a big dog. Good luck. |

Thanks for the suggestion! We will definitely go back during non class hours! I appreciate that suggestion! |
Congratulations on Dharma, she is not only smart but a cutie also, I will have careful with big dogs though, but some are well behave, maybe a yorkie meet up or toy meet up will help;) Do something, Learn something, Share something, Change something - Meetup just type, the area where you are and what you are looking for and/or what you are interested in, and hopefully you will find a meet up there:D |
Congrates! I agree I would take her back and reward here so their are no ill effects from going later on. |
I read this last night and scared me. I am so glad she is ok. I went to bed early and didn't see your text until about midnight and was afraid you were already in bed. I think it is a very good idea to take her back. Work with her because it may make her have an aggresion with all big dogs. Yorkies are very brave. I think they think hey I will get them before they get me. Most don't understand they are little. |
