CHEWING WOODWORK....why??? My friends little one who is 9 mos. recently started chewing the woodwork. Does anyone know why this would begin or how to deal with it? I don't believe it is boredom, because she has 2 other yorkies. A male around 1.5 and another girl 9 mos from the same litter. Any ideas? |
There is this stuff called bitter apple spray your friend may want to try. It supposedly works very well, but when we tried it on Bandit during his puppy chewing phase he just licked it off the couch (which was what he chewed:rolleyes::mad:) lol. Nala's chewing phase was all about my flip flops but we would just clap them together to make a loud noise and eventually she stopped. However, they were both younger than 9 months when going through their chewing phase. I'd give the bitter apple spray a try, or you could try crating her or using an ex-pen when nobody is watching her. |
Probably trying to shed some teeth...maybe get some bully sticks...I've got a little boarder that's all about chewing the woodwork, but he's trying to get rid of some teeth...I keep him well supplied w/bully sticks, and I scold him, bigtime, when he chews on the woodwork... |
Sophie went through a phase chewing the base boards at around a year old, but it passed. I think she was working on her retained baby teeth since they did come out on their own. Now, I just need to sand and repaint what she chewed. |
That is what has her baffled, she had extra teeth extracted when she was spayed at 7 mos. I guess there could be a tooth that they missed or had not come through. The girls were only close to 3 lbs when they were spayed, very small. Thanks for the replies, I'll pass info on. |
Lucy still does this on occasion. I usually grab one of her bully sticks or a chewy of some kind and that does the trick. |
Keoki went through a phase of this and then stopped- I used Bitter Apple and it worked. I would also try walking the dog and tiring him out even though there are other dogs in the house. It definitely sounds like teething to me but it will definitely pass :) |
Lily went through that phase too at around that age. I used the bitter apple spray and it worked like a charm. |
Shayna, did some work:rolleyes: in the narrow window by my front door, she did it out of frustration, we were not sure who did it, and one day, daddy was cutting the front grass, and I catch her doing it, she was winning loud in the same time and scratching the front door too. I told her NO in a firm way several times, and she has stop doing that:animal-pa |
It could be severe separation anxiety if it happens when the human companions are gone. Princess chewed on the dry wall like a mouse...she had white pieces stuck on her chin, evidence. We had to connect 2 expens together & make a play/napping room when nobody was home. She eventually out grew it. I no longer have to confine them in the expen when we leave. The thing w/bitter apple spray on wood, it needs to be reapplied often bc wood absorbs liquid. It doesn't work on some dogs...they actually like it! lol |
It's a puppy thing! Best thing to do is to provide lots of things to chew on.....and when she is caught chewing on the wrong thing, a sharp "no" with a chew toy given to her. When she starts to chew on a chew toy, she should be told "good girl". If your friend consistently redirects, she will catch on. Tell her the best thing to do is to keep it positive...no yelling! :) I use Nylabones...but only the durable ones that are not digestible. I also use Bitter Apple spray as another poster suggested. 0h, and when they are into that chewing stage it is wise to keep them crated when they cannot be closely observed! They can end up chewing something hazarous to them. |

We did use bitter apple and would re-direct with a chew toy. |
I have one of those, too. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/my-...-teething.html Unfortunately, she likes the bitter apple. I think Mardelin said to put a certain type of deodorant on the wood work to discourage it. I wish I could remember which brand. |

We did do the deodorant thing as well, totally forgot about that and I can't recall the brand we used. |
Yup... just to add to the mix. Teething! It's killer! My baseboards, cabinet bottoms and even the walls were chewed when my boys were like 6 - 9 months old also. Plus shoes, their beds, cords, toys, you name it! They did outgrow it but I had a lot of shoe funerals! I would recommend an indoor ex pen. Its big, safe for them and they can't reach the walls, baseboards, etc... |
