hairdryer hi there can ant one tell me when i have bathed masie and i get the hairdryer out on her she cries and yelps like mad the hairdryer is not on hot i feel so sorry for her but it has to be dne will she get used to it or will she be like this all time i carnt bare to dry her with the hairdryer she can sometimes get so aggresive with me as well when im dryer her :aimeeyork |
Some dogs just hate the dryer. I have no idea why. I used the dyer on Pasquale ONCE when he was little. He barked the entire time. Now all i have to do is take the dryer out ( i'm not even using it on him) and he turns into DEVIL DOG!! It's the only time he'll show teeth and growl and bark. I have no idea why he does it, cause i let him air dry after his baths. :confused: |
I can't blow mine dry either. I've just resigned my self to the fact that it's air drying or nothing in this house. |

Are you using a blow dryer for humans or one for pets? The human ones can get too hot and burn your pup. I use this one:  Amazon.com: Andis 60070 Comfort Dry Ionic/Ceramic... I find it very understandable the a dog would find a blow dryer to be scary. You are waving this VERY noisy thing at them that has lots of wind coming out of it! I get my dogs used to it gradually. They are around me when I blow dry my own hair, and from several feet away I also point it at them and talk to them and tell them how pretty they are. From the distance, it doesn't blow their hair much, but they get the idea and they aren't afraid of it. My previous Yorkie, the late great Loosie, would come running every time she heard the blow dryer. She would stand right next to my feet and wait for her turn. I guess she figured that when it was on, that was what she was supposed to do. She was eager to please me to the extreme, I miss that girl. |
Hand-held dryers put out a pretty high-pitched whine. Maybe it's hurting the dog's ears. Have you tried it at the lowest speed, where the whine is not so high? |
my dog sort of did the same thing. he didnt whine, but barked and tried to attack it. he still does when it first comes on but then settles down and then will let me dry him. he is a little over one year old now. it took sturness in my voice and perseverence to get him to settle down when he was younger. i use a human blow dryer and dry him with cooler air on low and once he is ok and settled down i can use it on high. |
I don't have to dry Ziva very often, but let her watch me do my hair every morning, she is happy to let me blow it at her from far away. When we do need to dry her in January / February she seems fine. |
i use a HUMAN blow dryer on Hazel. she HATES ITTTT, but is gettin used to it every week. she wiggles and moves all over!!! i found this past week that if i put the blow dryer on the counter and keep it running, and hold her while brushing her it makes it easier. this way you don't have to hold the blow dryer and you have more control over your puppy =] |
found a way I put my dyer on low cool and lay it down on a couple of towels. That gives both my hands on him and he seems ok with it. I don't blow it in his face. I get down on the floor and he stands against or between my legs while I dry his back side. I have to say as long as I don't wave the dryer around he does pretty good. |
I have used a human hair dryer on Pixie since day one. She is 2 yrs old now and doesn't mine the hair dryer. I start out on low and cool heat and then up it to hot heat butit has a disfuser on it so it blows the hair out evenly. |

If you use a human hair dryer, I would recommend always, during the entire process, having the air hit your body first. If your pup is on a table, have one hand in between the pup and the dryer as you are working with the pup's hair. Or, lay the dryer on it's side and hold the dog at a safe distance with the air hitting your hands first as well. That way you can feel how hot the air is that is hitting them. Remember that hot air always feels worse to them than it does to us, so if it is hot to you, it's way too hot for them. Just don't blow them without having it blow your skin, too at all times, so that you KNOW it isn't too hot for them. And don't even get me started on "cage dryers" ...... (ya, I realize nobody is suggesting using those here). |
My Coco loves the dryer. WQhe he sees me drying my hair he comes running and I just wave it bac and forth so he gets the air. Usually I just towel dry them and let them zoom around. In the winter I make sure the house is warm and then I warm the towels in the dryer first. |
