Breeder naming protocol? Can anybody tell me if there is some etiquette for naming puppies from AKC-registered breeders? I notice on a lot of breeders sites that dogs have "formal" names that are three or four words long, and a short "pet" name. Does the breeder choose the names? Or the buyer? I've been scouring the AKC site for information today but haven't seen any "AKC for Dummies" there. |
Not sure if this will help, but when I raised Bengal cats, they were registered with TICA (The International Cat Assoc). When my cats were registered the first name was the name of the cattery where they were from. For example my cat was from Millwood cattery so her name was Millwoods Razzmatazz of Wendigo and I called her Razz for short. Wendigo was the name of my cattery. Not sure in the Dog world, but it might be similar. I'd imagine in the Breeder section there would be many registered breeders who could help you. Hope it helps! |
Whoever owns the dog and sends in the registration papers is who names it. Some breeders do however require their kennel name to be part of the name while others won't let you use their kennel name. And then you have some breeders who will register the dog before you get him/her and in that case you have no choice in the matter. It just depends who has the dog and the circumstances but most often it is the buyer/owner that picks the name as they get the papers when they get the pup so they then have the responsibility to pick a name and send in the papers. |
We were a lot better with doing our Westie's formal name, and called him Max for short; King's Maxwell of Lanier. King=our last name, Maxwell=Max for short, Lanier=we lived on Lake Lanier. (: |
When my sister got her schnauzer when we were little we were required to carry on the lines " last name " which was von schmidt she was Chelsea Von schmidt and man is that fun to yell out the back door when your 10 lol |
