Yorkie or Silky? Recently, I've been confused about my dogs breed! She has papers that say she's a yorkie, but is she a silky? She weighs 10-12 pounds, is 9 inches tall, and her color is silver and gold. How can I tell the difference FOR SURE? |
Sometimes yorkies and silkies can look like each other, but if they are truly bred to the standard, it is easy to tell the difference. Silkies have a more slanted triangular head and larger muzzle as opposed to yorkies more rounder and smaller muzzle, which I think is the easiest way to tell them apart. You can read up on their standard on the AKC site. but again, just like people, we all vary in looks. For instance, a human's "breed" (ethnicity) not all of the same ethnicity all look all the same. Same with dogs. The only way to be sure is a dna test. |

Also, if you actually have papers (depending on where they are from, AKC, CKC, etc) odds are she's a Yorkie. I reallllyyy tend to think Jackson is a Silky. In attitude, looks, and everything. He's almost fits the Silky standard to a tee looks-wise as well as personality wise. He's got the long nose, with a bigger head, and bigger eyes, bigger pointier ears, longer body, really athletic build and not fragile at all. Like I've met some larger yorkies weighing over 10lbs but they're not as solid as he is. I really don't know. I've also contacted several (probably over 10) reputable AKC Silky breeders and 9/10 said he looked identical to a Silky and nearly 100% Silky, but they can't say for sure obviously. I mean-- odds seem to be that he's a Yorkie simply because they're more common in the US, esp. from backyard breeders who don't breed to standard, but I dunno. I want to get a DNA test but have heard iffy things about them and not sure I want to waste the money! First pic is a show Silky... and this, minus the long hair, is Jackson to me. It is his exact head shape and body shape and tail position (even tho his is full). |
