Travel or Board? We are going on vacation in October to the beach - Hilton Head Island, SC. We are staying in a condo and I have no clue their policy on pets. Our original plan was to share a room with my sister and her husband but they had to cancel - we were going to board Nick and Daisy. Now that we will be alone in the condo, I am wondering if we should bring them with us. We haven't traveled since we've had two - not sure how it would go. Nick gets car sick but for a long trip I could get meds from vet. Those of you who travel with your dogs - how do they do with eliminating? Nick is a spaz-o and still poops in my son's room on occasion and has been "potty trained" for over a year now. I would just die if he peed in the condo. Also, how often do you ahve to stop for them to run around? The trip will take around 8 hours. It would be me, husband, 3.5 year old son, 2 dogs. Is this too much to handle?? |
First you need to fins out the pet policy of where you are staying. You will need to stop every 2-3 hours to walk the dogs. How do you feel about leaving the dogs alone in the room, or in a cage while you are out? Do you have someone that you trust watching the dogs if you do not take them? Vacations are not a lot of fun if you are worried about what the dogs are getting into. Ours travel well in the car, but we would not take them on vacation as we are never in the room, and most places will not let dogs in. Best of luck. |
If we didn't take them we would have to board them - I don't know anyone that would dogsit. When we go out they stay in the kitchen at home. So, I think they would be OK for a few hours at a time in the condo alone in the kitchen. Or we plan to send tons of time on the beach and we could bring them with us there. We aren't very adventurous people so we usually just relax on vacation - on beach or in room. I just worry if they would flip out or something not being at home. I do need to check the condo's pet policy. The check-in office is about a mile away from our actual condo and there is no daily cleaning people or anything. So, I was thinking we would just sneak them in and hope for the best. |
First is finding out if you are even allowed to have them, so many places do not allow pets period! We don't have the best car riders in our family. Crosley has a piercing whine, Camden gets car sick and Wrigley cries like a baby! So meds are a must if we travel any distance! Do you crate them when you are gone? If you are concerned about accidents, I would contain them in someone's condo, otherwise you might be facing charges for clean-up, etc.. Not to mention if they have any kind of anxiety and chew on anything! :eek: I would say every couple of hours you would need to stop, which you probably want to do for your child anyway to let them run around and get some fresh air. |

The beaches are pet friendly - you can even let them off leash but mine can't do that. I was worried about the freaking out - I never thought of the chewing. They don't bark unless someone knocks on the door and that wouldn't happen there. Last time we stayed there we only saw 3 other people the whole stay - we are going in the "off season". I guess I should check their pet policy. If they have a big deposit, we won't be able to afford it, though. |

My husband asked the condo about pets - NO pet policy. :( Well, I found a local place to board them. It is not a commercial boarding facility like Pet Safe Village but more of a training place that offers boarding, too. They get access to an outside "run" with grass (some only have concrete) and an inside little house thing. Plus they will take them on a hike! Mike would probably hate it but I thought it was nice to offer it. Plus it is cheaper than all other places around here - $18 per dog per night. |
$18 a day is very reasonable. My large dog also is boarded at his training place, and loves it there. Have a great vacation. |
$18 is very reasonable! Crosley our Yorkie Poo is the only one we have ever boarded and it cost us about $30+ a night, but we sprung for the doggie condo with the cot bet & tv overlooking the waterfall! :D |
Another option When we travel, we hire in-our-home petsitters that have petsitting businesses. It's cheaper and the dogs stay in our home. The petsitters come in 3x during the day and sleep over for $55 a night. I have three dogs and a parrot so boarding would cost me $25 per animal per day an I'd have to do vaccinate and my dogs would be stressed. They don't even miss us at home. There are professional petsitter association and websites so you might find this in your area. I've also done day visits with no sleep overs and it works out fine too. |
Well, I'm glad it is a good rate. Even thought it was the cheapest I found I still thought it was a little much - for the whole week for both pups its going to be over $250!!! Ouch! |

Why don't you post here on yt that you are looking for a sitter, or a place for you babies to stay while you're gone? Maybe someone in your area, or the vacation location who can help you out. You can pay that person, and it'll probably be a little cheaper, also, that person will probably be familiar with yorkies since they are on yt and probably have a yorkie. I would def check that person out, as if it were for a "skin" child. Personally, my husband and I had to change our lives when we decided to get Prince. We won't go anywhere without him. We will never board him. We used to go to Cabo San Lucas every year, but we haven't since we had Prince because of petcare issues. We don't miss it...well, only a little. We found that there are a lot of places we can go to and have a great time that are pet friendly. Best of luck!! |
I looooove Hilton Head. I really want to bring Jackson there because he's a big beach dog, and I've been a few times and it's a really dog friendly city. I really enjoy traveling with Jackson. Most of what we do, he can be included in so it's not a problem. He just stays free roam in the hotel rooms and is fine but I only leave him 2-3hrs tops. |
