OMG Hawk Warning! Just to let everybody know-SO NOT a good idea to put bird and squirrel feeders up in the back yard or anywhere you may let your babies run free! This AM around 10 my DH let the boys out for a little run. He let Connor in after a little while, but as per usual Neo was being the pain in the a-- about comming in without a bribe. So DH decided to sit at the patio for a bit while Neo got to explore awhile longer. Lo and behold, down swooped a BIG red-tailed hawk with a Yorkie jones! DH chased it off and got Neo inside, but it was too close a call to chance it anymore. NO more feeders in the back yard. They attract prey (birds, squirrels, field mice) and predatory birds are on the attack, at least today. Better safe than sorry!!! |
Wow that was close. glad your little one was ok :) xxx |
OMG! Yesterday I let my four out into the tiny backyard and I stayed at the door to watch them. Next thing I saw was a 4-5 foot wingspan shadow come across the sidewalk! Thank God I left the clothesline up... it hangs across the walkway... the only thing I figure may have deterred this bird. I read that mirrors (like gazing balls) and shiny objects in the yard may help scare off birds of prey... and I concentrated everything shiny in this part of the yard... still scary! |
Same here this morning, we were out on the deck and all I saw was the shadow and it was like may day may day inside inside!!!! They just flew around in circles. It is so scary! |
Just an FYI about the squirrels too. My neighbor starting feeding them because our babies love to chase them. Ally is actually obsessed with them. Well, my neighbor got a bad case of ticks in her yard and it took about three professional treatments to get rid of them. She no longer feeds them, but we still watch them run around the neighborhood. Glad the big bad bird didn't get your baby. We have that problem too. I can't take mine out without watching for those also. I haven't found anything to keep them away yet! |
not allowed out alone we have a pair of hawks that fly around our place all the time. We hear them long before we see them. They have attached several birds in my yard. Winston is not allowed outside by himself. |
Well we had one come in for the kill on our little Paris, we had all been talking about this at my in-laws. Everyone was outside all the dogs kids etc and low and behold my father in law saw this thing coming and by the time he realized what it was it was coming for her everyone jumped up and started screaming. Too close of a call, my daughter was there when it happened she was a crazy fur mom before and now well lets just say my sweet paris who is very independent is literally stuck to her hip. |
what about crows? |
When im in florida with my babies. They even come around when im walking them and i have to run back in the house! glad everything is ok |
Weh ave them here too as we back up to 2000 acres of Forrest. Besides Hawks and Owls, weh ave a few Coyotes that we are always on the alert for. We always make sure that Carlo always goes out anytime Maxine is out. At least it is not as bad as when we were out in AZ. |
Wow! Glad nothing happened to them! Before Blue, I saw a big bird, it looks like a pigeon but bigger with the beak like hawk. Java (4 lbs Chihuahua) was outside with Pearl (Bichon Frise mix), they were not interested in the bird and the bird was just standing on the ground looking around then flew away. I assumed that the bird was not interested in Java. :D I was right next to the grrls & I was ready to protect Java and Pearl but nothing happened so it was all good. |
Hawk! I had the same thing happen a couple of weeks ago. I DON'T have birdfeeders in the back yard. Luckily, we were sitting outside. We noticed our large dog, Fred, standing over little Ziggy and he kept putting Zig in is mouth. We kept telling him no, but he kept doing it. Not hurting him but it was strange. Fred kept looking up in the trees. Sure enough, a moment later a huge hawk took off from that tree. Guess he decided he didn't want to tangle with Fred. It scared us to death! |
I hawk/owl proofed my back yard, by running nylon fishing line, about every 18" across the whole back yard...I had someone put a nail about every 4th board on a 6 1/2' wood fence...It's amazing, how the hawks used to circle my backyard, everytime I went out in it...Now they just fly over...And yes, I moved a composter, from the backyard, because I think it attracted mice, from the easement, behind my house...If you think the hawks are a problem now, wait 'till it gets cold...Omg'sh they get aggressive, and the worst time of the year, is in the Spring, when they are teaching their young to hunt...That's when I almost lost a pup too!!! |
