Mya got out of the yard
 

I honestly thought I would be the next one to post one of those awful my baby is missing posts....

The little bugger dug under the fence and disappeared. Thankfully I watch her closely outside and saw her go... unfortunately, I have a badly sprained ankle (again, thanks to her - dug a hole in the middle of the yard and I tripped in it!) and I am sure it was rather comical (and very painful for me) for anyone who may have seen me hobbling behind her trying to catch her. Eventually, I was able to coax her to me with the promise of a carrot... but I really thought I was gonna lose her forever. We are surrounded by busy streets on all sides.

Needless to say, she is now going out on a rope attached to the clothesline. It's a pain in the butt as she get's tangled, but at least I can let her out and know she'll be somewhere in that yard when I go to check on her. Thank God Oliver is not like that - he's more interested in where I am and getting back to me than he is getting out of the yard.

Let this be a warning.. it literally only took a second... watch your babies when they are outside!!!! Thankful this post has a happy ending from the start, now I must go recover from my heart attack.. lol

My little girl does the same thing..we ended up digging along the side of the fence about 3 inches into the ground like a trench and placeing anonther fencing..so when she diggs she can not get through the other fence and she gives up..we just fill it back up and after a few times she just stop..no more fun I GUESS.. far it has worked. :thumbup:

WOW! Glad Mya is ok !!!! My oldest Scottie, Bear, was quite the escape artist until she was about 3 or 4. She taught her daughter too. Once they escaped during a midnight potty & made it across a major street into someone's backyard. Thankfully it was only an adventure(the woman put them up for the night & called in the am). But they do grow out of it. Hope you can keep little Harriet Houdini from attempting another prison break & your ankle heals!

this might be a dumb question, but can't you just go out with her on a leash? I would be concerned about tying her to a rope to a clothesline and what could happen if she got tangled up :(

My sentiments exactly. I would be scared to death to put her out on a rope.:animal36

She's on a harness and watched very closely. I actually never leave the window at this point. She's really very good and stops and sits the second she feels a slight tug. Taking her out on a leash every time she needs to go is not an option until my ankle heals, which from the looks of it could be a while. If the yard wasn't so big I would do something to keep her from being able to dig under, but it's very large. I'm thinking about doing a dog run, where she can't get tangled at all - not much point until the spring, we usually have 10 feet of snow out there most of the winter...

Jackson did this to me once last year; we were at a dog park we had never been to and it was empty, just us there. I'm sitting on the bench, letting him do his thing, and he sees a squirrel and goes chasing after it.. well there was a huge hole under this part in the fence, like he easily got under there and he's 15lbs, and he just took off as if there was no fence there at all and continued chasing the squirrel. I saw it and was in disbelief, as I hadn't checked the perimeter of the fence yet or anything. Luckily, once the squirrel was out of sight, he came running back! But whew, gave me a heart attack! I used to let him off leash a lot more since we live on 3 acres unfenced but once he turned a year old, that prey drive of his got strong! He's becoming more reliable with his recall- I've been working so hard with him and I think it's really THE most important thing you can teach. :thumbup: I am so glad Mya is okay!

Oh man, I know the fear of that situation. Catherine loves to escape the yard, no matter what we do to fix the places where she gets out. Fortunately we live on a lot of acreage, so she can't run in to a road or something, but it still always shakes me up. Lately, what she likes to do it get out of the yard and run directly to the pond and chase the ducks. I am always SOOO afraid she is going to drown, and once I actually jumped in to the nasty water to get her... eewwww.... But, now if I just ignore her, she doesn't go chasing after the ducks, she just comes back to the porch. :)

This last week, I have been making her potty on a puppy pad instead of going outside AT ALL because the whole thing scares me so much. I can't for winter when she doesn't want to go outside, LOL.

Wow, how scary!! Here we also have to worry about birds of prey, snakes and coyotes!!!

I have watched my little one standing next to me as I visit with a neighbor dig quite a deep hole! She is a born bred excavation engineer! SO I wouldn't openly trust her out even with a fence. We call the leash her fall protection. She is always leashed, partly I worry about her digging her way to freedom OR a coyote. Which by the way last year 2 came up to a house at 6:30 in the morning and attacked the unsuspecting Yorkie that came out for a potty run. We live on a golf course, this tells me how domesticated the coyotes are and how they are not fearful of anyone. The deer are the same way, had 2 nearly run us over a couple of nights ago when we were just out for our last potty of the evening. I am so glad your baby is home safe and sound. Just think if someone had been taping your wild adventure you could be a AFV winner!

Even with a harness, it is possible to get leashes or ropes tied around their tiny necks or legs. My boys have done it, but thankfully I was right on top of them to prevent injury or death.

I won't let Winston out of my site. We have hawks flying around all the time and stray dogs. Last summer there was a big scare on coyotes, told people not to even let little ones out in the yards alone. We just live outside the city limits.
