Introduction Hi All, I wanted to introduce myself. I just got a yorkie 5 days ago. His name is Freddy and he is now 13 weeks. He is my first dog and i am kind of scared not be a good "puppy mom" :) but this forum helps with a lot of my questions. He is a good boy and i even think that potty training is going ok so far. He sleeps through the night without even going once. Since i work full time, i keep him in the kitchen during the day. Right now he barks and cries every time i leave the house which is sooo hard for me....when did your baby stop crying before you left the house? I know I only had him for a couple days and can't expect him to be fine with being alone all day already....i am just wondering.. Since he still misses some of his shots..which he will get in 3 weeks for his 16 week check up..i wonder if he can be around other dogs..i would like to sign up for a training for puppies..the vet offers it for free for new dog owners. When i take him for walks i make sure not to let him get close to other dogs yet...what do you think? I also would like to know when you took your puppy to the groomer for the first time? Freddy's hair is getting longer and he needs to have his nails trimmed (which i don't feel comfortable doing myself yet) . Thanks for your input. |
Welcome to yt!!! We are so glad to have you here!!!! You are right, it is a good idea to limit your Yorkie's contact with other animals until he has had all of his shots. SO, wait to enroll him in puppy classes. I live in the woods so there aren't any classes around here, LOL, but I would think that in those sort of courses you'd have to bring proof of Rabies vaccination before you can come to class. But, maybe someone else can tell you more. :) |
Hey! Welcome! I know most training classes around here just require your puppy to have their first 2 sets of vaccinations. Think about it, they are all puppies and if they've had the same exact two shots, I just don't see what they can pass to each other? It's probably pretty rare. I believe that while we of course need to keep our dogs safe, that puppy socialization is sooo important. So if not in a class, if you have a friend with another little dog, etc, anything is so important for a young pup. I didn't take Jackson to the groomer until he was 4 1/2 months old. :) |
Welcome to YT! with my dog Charlie, he cried when I left so i started turning on the radio so he would have some sounds in the house. This helped but it still took him about 2 months before he quit totally crying. Now he sleeps all day and is ready for playtime when I get home! He will the be the joy of your life...I know mine is! |

Welcome to both you and Freddy!! |
Welcome!! My pups didn't go to the groomer for about six months..I just gave them baths at home. But, hey, I was a little over-protective. I remember reading somewhere that getting their haircut too soon would cause them to turn silver faster, but that was a long time ago and could have been incorrect. As far as separation anxiety goes, my Maggie was my only dog for the first two years of her life. She would shake and cry when I left and I'd arrive back home to her food not touched and vomit because her belly was empty :( This isn't the usual for most doggies, so I wouldn't be overly concerned. I CAN tell you that as soon as I got Max, she never did it again. Companionship helps a lot. A lot of people on here leave the tv or radio on to keep their pups company, I'd recommend trying that! Again, welcome! You did the right thing by coming here. There is a vast array of knowledge here and it will help you become the best yorkie mommy yet! |
My Yorkie was my first dog ever also! And it is a scary feeling. I did the same as you, enrolled in Puppy Classes. Sometimes puppies need to be taught english and people need to be taught "puppy". :D I went to the Petsmart puppy school and I believe she had to have her Rabies shot and I had to bring proof of that. I would limit exposure to other dogs and areas that other dogs roam until are her shots are in place. Good luck and Welcome to YT! |
Looks like you are getting great advice, so just wanted to say hello and welcome! :) |
Welcome to YT!! You'll find alot of great advise from everyone here. |
Thanks everybody!! I am here every day..looking for advise and answers to my questions. :) I noticed that Freddy is not really eating much...he drinks a lot but doesn't touch his food much. I give him Iam's smart puppy right now...but decided to buy Blue Buffalo after doing some research. Hope that he will start eating more of that. Also, Freddy started to bark at other dogs that pass us when i walk him...and he does not stop...even continues barking after the dog is long gone...How can i teach him to listen to me? He usually understands STOP but not when he sees other dogs..as i said i only had him for 6 days now and he was always too scared of other dog and would hide behind me if we passed one...but not anymore... I am looking forward to this long weekend ans spending some time with Freddy...:yay_jump: |
