Hurricane? The forecasters are predicting we may be hit by a hurricane this coming weekend. I am wondering what to do with Roxie...she only potties outside! I sure don't want to take her out in a hurricane to do her business! Any suggestions? |
When we have a hurricane or TS we still take the dogs out. Always on a leash, close to the house and very quickly! |
I live in Fort Lauderdale. Samantha goes to the dog park 3 x a day. We were having a tick problem where she was going by our house so that is why we go so often. If hurricane Earl affects us, I to will have the same problem. My friend uses Wee wee pads for her Yorkie, but Samantha will not use them. |
I am scared out of my mind about this hurricane thing! My best guess for my Roxie doing her business is going to be putting down some type of potty pads in hopes that she uses them, if its not bad I will take her out quickly. But if its as bad as I think its gonna be, I guess we will just have to deal with it..lol...I am in NC, and really worried about this thing. |

When I lived in FL, we would take the dogs out, but we waited until there was a lull in the storm, then MADE all the dogs go out. All those potty training days when you chant "go potty" really pay off when you can take your dog out and tell them to go and they do! |
i agree my puppy starting going out on our deck and did 3 times today so i praise her each time. she is still having some issues with eating her food as she is picky we give her triped wet dog for her coat and i've tried nature's harvest dog food dry kibble so far she is starting to like but i've never seen a dog so fussy.:) |
Don't forget to put together emergency kits for your dogs while you are getting yourself prepared- food, water, meds, vet papers, first aid kits etc. Hope everyone stays safe! |
My friend had the same problem because his dog was trained to go on the grass, he refuse to go on the pee pad. So he build a wooden box and bought sod from Home Depot and put in the box. Since it is real grass, his dog did his business on that when the weather is bad. |
I have been through a few hurricanes, last was in 2004 when we had a lot of damage to the house. When a hurricane hits here, we get out of Dodge fast and take the babes with us! When it is stormy (which is normal for afternoons and evenings this time of year) I don't let the babes out. They have to use the "sham wow", I keep one down instead of pee pads. |
We live on Long Island. I wouldn't worry too much about the hurricane. I mean they don't have to pee or poop that often. I will take them out in the backyard close to the house with a leash. They will be fine. |

I don't think it's going to be that bad in NS. my dad's a fisherman, he said that all the fishermen have come in, cause the water will be a mess, but it'll be nothing like Juan... BTW where in NS... I didn't know there were other nova scotians on here. I'm in Halifax. |

I have a dog litter box that Roxie won't go anywhere near. I have never tried wee-wee pads...but I have a feeling she would react the same way as she does with the litter box. |
I also live in Palm Bay, FL. The 2004 hurricanes were very destructive to everyone here. We left for Georgia for one and stayed for the next. We only had one dog at the time, but had no problem taking her out to potty. Now I still have her (my pek of almost 13 years who is blind, back legs are frozen, has heart murmer, terrible allergies, and is almost at the end of her life) and two small yorkies. If I have a problem taking them out, whether we go or stay, I am planning to put up the IRIS puppy pen with nothing but newspaper or puppy pads in it. I will put them in it to potty. Since they are only outside pottiers, it may be a while before they potty, but it may be safer than them flying around the back yard. That potty training does come in handy though. My pek did her business just so I would get her out of the rain. Good luck and make sure you have a hurricane kit for the babies. I have a thread somewhere on here with a list of supplies. |
