What is my dog missing? This is for all you experienced YTers and breeders. In so many that I've read, so many of you have said that yorkie babies should be with their moms and littermates till 12 weeks of age. I brought Kelsey home at 9 1/2 weeks. She's playful, doesn't really bite, full of energy, and uses manners when playing with my other (in other words she shows my older dog respect when they play). Is there anything that she didn't learn for those last 2 1/2 weeks that she was gone? Just curious about this. I didn't know before hand that she should have stayed longer. From what I knew of dogs I knew a dog should never leave their mom before eight. I've only had one other yorkie and he was an adult when I got him. Thanks |
The general rule is 10 to 12 weeks. At 9 1/2 it's a little early, but she sounds to be well socialized. The ones people get upset about are the 6 to 8 week old puppies. Some puppies may do fine at 8 weeks, but others do not. So the line has to be drawn somewhere. Before you bring them home, you don't know if they are one of those that will do OK. Some people get lucky. It's just best to wait until at least 10 weeks 'cause most of them are well socialized by that time. There is no magic number. it could be 8 weeks, it could be 9 weeks and a day. But the older they are, they greater the odds are that they will do OK. Many unsocialized puppies end up in shelters because the people do not know how to deal with them, they do the wrong things and make it worse, and they end up blaming the poor puppy, thinking that they are untrainable, or aggresive or what ever, and it need not have happened if the puppy had just been left with it's mother longer. If you could just observe the interaction between mom and babies between 8 and 10 weeks, you would understand. |

It could be that your other puppy helped socialize. Some dogs that go home too soon are singletons or the other dog in the house is not interested in playing a teaching role. Sounds like your little one is doing well. :) |

She teaches them how to play nice and not bite and to know their place. They also learn to potty outside by example, that is if the breeder lets them out with the mother. Some breeders, keep them confined to their pens, away from the other dogs, so they don't learn proper dog ettiquett. Puppy mills leave them in small cages and that is where they have to eat sleep and potty, and they don't learn that they should leave the bed to potty. Those can be very difficult to housebreak. If you have a breeder who does things like this, its ok to get them around this time because they are well socialized, just keep the socialization going and you should be fine. It's breeders like those mentioned in this quote, like puppy mills, and ones that confine the pups that you need to worry about. |
