New Puppy Coming home Sept 13th!
 
Hi All!

I have been diligently reading through many of the forum threads all over Yorkietalk in preparation for my little Stuart who will be ready to come home to me in a few weeks!
I wonder if you all have any opinions on any "must have items" I should buy before he gets here! I want to be as ready as possible!
So far I have purchased a crate, the smallest they had at walmart, though it has a divider with it if it is too big. I also bought a small puppy bed for him to have in my living room. I did buy a small Kong chew toy for when he starts with teething. Also have a retractable leash and a collar for the little guy.
Should I be getting more things or should I wait to have him home for a while to judge his personality etc.
I have not bought puppy pads etc yet, but of course I know I need those too :)
This is my first puppy period. So any help would be appreciated!:)

Welcome to YT! And good luck with Stuart. (Love the name) I would suggest a small harness instead of or in addition to the collar.

You need a harness, not a collar. Collars can cause collapsed trachea. Other wise it sounds like you're ready.

Hi and welcome to YT, and congratulations on your new pup.
I agree you should use a harness instead of a collar as its much safer for their delicate little necks.

How old is your little one? 12 weeks? I would get some nuti cal in just in case. If you search nuti-cal on this site and read up on it. Its really helps. Also i would get in some Baby wipes there ALWAYS handy to have after poops etc and for cleaning your little guy up. Have you got shampoos and conditioners and detangler? Also i bought my little one a towel all to herself for after baths etc. I would also get a brush and get him used to being brushed every night.

Also will you be seeing your little guy again before you pick him up? A week before i got Poppy i gave my breeder a small blanket to put in with her and her brothers and sisters. When he came home she had the smell of them all on her blanket and it conforted her alittle to small them.

Congratulations on getting your your little furbaby steve!! bet your all excited :D :D xxx

Thanks for the advice! He'll actually be only 9 weeks when he comes home with me, but apparently that's when the breeder I am getting him from always lets her puppies go if they are on track with development! I'll definitely look up Nutri-Cal! Baby wipes are a good idea. I don't have shampoo's yet, I noticed that a hair salon down the street from my condo has pet-shampoo in the window for sale as a package, do you think there are definite no no's to look out for with shampoos?

I may be able to go down to see Stu again before he is delivered to me, but we are separated by 2 hours at the moment so Im not sure, I will bring down one of the blankets I have if I have another chance to see him.

Mine all get a blanket included in their puppy bags. Their new mommas have told me it makes a difference.

Congratulations on your new baby. We just brought Sophia's new brother home this past weekend. A couple of weeks before we picked him up we sent a blanket to him that Soph, DH and I had slept with for a couple of nights. His breeder let him sleep with it before he came home to us so that he had something that smelled like us before he met us AND something that smelled like his brother and mom when he left. I didn't get to meet him in person before he was delivered but he already knew what I smelled like from the blanket so I wasn't a total stranger to him. I like to think that's helped him settle in more quickly.

I would get lots of chew toys. The kong is a good idea, you can stuff it with peanut or cheese.

The harness and nutri-cal are essentials:) If possible, see if the breeder would be willing to hold on to the puppy until 12 weeks when he will be mature enough to leave his mother. Yorkies develop differently than large breed dogs and need to stay with their mothers so they learn social skills too!

Also, we wound up using baby receiving blankets because we were bad at potty training our first puppy and he was a slow learner (I'd like to think that had a tiny bit to do with it lol) so we could just throw them in the washer when a few were dirty and always had extras for a bed.

Yes that on the breeder keeping the pup till 12 weeks!!!

Also, if you want, you can consider an ex-pen in addition to (or like I did instead of) a crate. Start doing research on good quality food, good shampoo, (DO NOT USE HUMAN PRODUCTS!!) and start setting up a schedule of when you will be taking your baby to potty.

An extra couple of weeks can make a big difference in their social development. If you have ever seen the interaction between the mother and the puppies, you wold understand why. They teach them so much about how to play nice and to know their place. You get a puppy that knows not to chew on you, and they are easier to housebreak.

The social development starts around 8 weeks of age. Up until that time, the mother just feeds them and cleans up after them. At 8 weeks she starts to teach them and scolds them if they do wrong. It's amazing to watch.

I bought a snuggle puppy sent it to the breeder beforehand so she could get Riley's mommy & daddy's sent on it.......

I am in a condo up on the 5th floor. I bought one of the Purina Second Nature Litter Boxes, but instead of the litter, I put weewee pads in it. I also purchased a diaper genie to dispose of them so there is no smell. I brought him home at about 10-weeks old. He starting using the weewee pads right away..... I would put him in it and tell him go potty.....and when he did he got a treat.... every so often i would walk over to it and point to it and tell him, Riley, go potty. He picked it up very quickly. He just turned 15 weeks and has been using it on his own.... at times he will use it and then jump out and bark for his treat.
