Shots
 
Fynnlie's getting puppy shots today. He doesn't know yet because I didn't tell him... :rolleyes: I don't want him to get to be afraid of going to the vet! He's going to be a very unhappy boy. :(

I'm an unhappy momma! :( :(

Wish us luck!

Does anyone have any suggestions to make it better?

Aw we should all whisper so he dont hear us.... wish him luck an lots of puppy kisses coming his way from Poppy. Poppy gets her first shot on tuesday eeek lol. xxxx

It's his second round of puppy shot(s). I'm actually not sure how many he has to get. One or two...

Just asking because while DHPP (also called DAPP) is fine (comes as a combo), giving rabies at the same time isn't really a good idea (and most vets do it). Also, lepto should be separated if it has to be given (which is not often). It's better for them and reduces the occurrence of reactions. :)

Good luck! I hate having to take Jackson to the vet, but they get through it. :(

Jackson got his second round at 12 weeks old, and he got DHLPP, but he had a reaction to the 'L' part (which is Lepto vaccine). Just a forewarning, a lot of little dogs have bad reactions to lepto, but discuss with your vet how dangerous lepto is in your area and if it's a necessary vaccine to give. :) Alot of dogs do fine with it, and others don't!

He's not getting the rabies yet. I talked to his vet and he doesn't feel like Fynnlie needs to get it yet. Which, I'm totally okay with. Fynn doesn't go outside unsupervised and he doesn't have any interaction with anyone who is positive for rabies. So, we're holding off on that for a few more weeks.

As far as the DHPP, should I be expecting anything bad with it? What about the lepto? Does he really need to get it? Should I tell his vet that I don't want the lepto?

I'm going to find out if he has to get the Lepto in his shot... I don't want him to have a reaction. Not if I can prevent it and he doesn't need that particular vaccine in the first place...

The longer you wait, the better for lepto. It should be given as a single. It is given twice (three weeks apart) and then every year. Best not to give with other vaccines since reactions aren't uncommon. Yorkies are particularly sensitive (along with other small breeds). It should only be given if the bacteria is prevalent in your area. Only you and your vet decide if the risk of the disease outweighs the risk of the vaccine.

He may be sore and tired from the DHPP. Most do fine with it. Children's Benadryl should be handy and know the dose (you can ask the vet to calculate it). They should tell you what side effects they'd be concerned about.

I just called the vet and spoke with his wife, who is his nurse. She said that we can hold off on the Lepto for a few weeks. She wants him to weigh a little bit more before he gets it. He will definitely get it, just not yet. I'm sorry, I feel a little uneducated asking this, but what is the bacteria that the Lepto is for?

I hadn't thought about the Children' Benadryl. I'll pick some up after his appointment, I have to go to Walmart anway. :)

Fynnlie got two shots last night. Bordetella and DHPP. I talked to the vet and the vets wife, his VA, at length about the Lepto. They both agreed to wait a little until he's bigger before giving the Lepto. YAY!

He did really well with everything! Except, the thermometer up his bottom and the second shot. The first one caught him by surprise and he just yelped a little. He screamed and cried and cried and CRIED over the second shot. It broke my heart. :( :( :( :( My poor Fynnie!

He weighs 2.7lbs! :) He's growing nicely! He was 1.5lbs when I picked him up! YAY!

I'm glad he got through it okay, poor little guy. Do some research online about Lepto before giving it to him, toy breeds can have pretty severe reactions to it. If you don't have wildlife nearby, I wouldn't even do it. I didn't research the vaccine, and almost lost Addie because of it. She was given the rabies and the DHLPP at the same time. Now she doesn't get Lepto, and the two shots (rabies and DHPP) are given two to four weeks apart. This year all of mine are getting the three year rabies and a titer test for everything else. If they need boosters on anything, it will be two to four weeks after the rabies (only given because it's required by law). Mine are also never outside without someone with them.

Fynnlie NEVER goes outside without being on his harness, muchless with out me being there with him. I've done a little research on the Lepto and I'm not terribly thrilled with it. :( :( Yea, Fynn's going to get his rabies at a different time than anything else, even if that means I have to spend the 34$ for an office visit twice!

mine just got his second series yesterday and now he runs and hides from me...i feel so bad...cause when they gave it to him he cried and then looked up at me like saying "how could you let them do this to me" but it is for his own good and cause city requires it...:animal-pa

Oh, I'm sorry! Fynn didn't seem to mind it after it was over... It was just the GETTING of the shots that he didn't like. :(

He was a little tender this morning and whined when I picked him up but aside from that, he seems to be doing just fine! :)

I hope your baby comes around soon!

Just so you know, my vet doesn't charge an office visit fee for the second time in the two-four week period. However, they charge it as a "wellness exam", which mine don't get the on the second visit.

Just as an extra thing to think about with the rabies vaccine. I have Bentley get a benadryl shot first before the rabies in case of an inadvertent reaction. I don't give Bentley lepto and no corona as per his breeder. And I definitely would wait the 2 - 4 weeks in between vaccinations. Next year he will need a booster but I am having the titers test done first...if the antibodies are still enough in him he won't need a booster for a particular vaccine.

Oops, forgot to mention that. Addie gets a benadryl shot, but Mia and Dany don't as they never had adverse reactions. make sure you can get back to the vet asap if something goes wrong. It's why I try to get appts. in the morning-to make sure they're still open if I need them.
