Recent threads have me thinking.... Is my 'designer dog' really welcome here? She is only half a yorkie after all. The designer dog threads make me kinda feel like my gorgeous little Piper is not as good as all of 'your' (an in general your, not pointing at anyone) full blooded yorkies. 1) I do not call her a Morkie on a regular basis. Really, it just saves me a few key strokes when I type but in real life I call her a yorkie/maltese mix (or vice versa). If this bothers people I will stop using the shortened name and type it all out. 2) I did not pay outrageous prices for her and I did not go to a puppymill for her. I don't feel like I have to explain where my baby came from, but I do feel very defensive when I read certain things. 3) I love her and I would love to open my home up to another yorkie mix/maltese mix. When you see other types of mutts on the street do you ask the owners what they are mixed with? If they know exactly which two breeds made their pup do you automatically think they are horrible people? If they were made up of two mutts who were two mutts who were two mutts...etc...would they be 'better people' because they have multiple mutt lines? I am not trying to upset anyone here...Yorkie, maltese, or mix owners alike. I guess I am just in a sensitive spot right now and wanted to get it all out. |
Your "designer dog" is most welcome here - as are you:) You owe no-one an explanation of where you got your sweet Piper from. Beamer is a pure-bred Yorkie. Lil Bit, I have always had my doubts about whether she is a pure bred or not. But I love them and treat them both the same (OK, my husband says I give Beamer preferential treatment, but I say he gives Lil Bit preferential treatment:D) Don't let any threads worry you:) |
Of course you and your dog are welcome. I don't think the intent of the thread was to make you feel like your dog is inferior in any way. I think the issue people have is with shady breeders purposely producing them, labeling them as designer dogs and giving them outrageous price tags. Members here love ALL dogs. It's the unethical breeders...be it Yorkies or otherwise..they can't stand! |
Honestly, I like it here! I love my pup more than I thought possible. She is a great little mix who has opened my eyes up to the love a little one can give. She goes everywhere with me!Right now is NOT the time for us to add our third dog to the family...which we learned recently. BUT, if I get the chance to get another Yorkie in the future I will!! Nothing against Maltese, but I would stick wit the yorkie side of my girl! LOL!! |
Yes....absolutely......you and your precious morkie are more than welcome here! I apologize if things you've read here give you the impression you weren't welcome. I can understand though why you may have thought so, but please don't think this way any longer. It's not that yorkies mix owners are not welcome here, just that many of us have a problem with the breeders of the mixes. But then personally, I have a problem with lots of breeders and think most shouldn't be breeding yorkies, or any other animal. |
Of course you & your baby are welcome here. I hope my post in the Off Topic forum did not offend you. My intentions were never to offend anyone or make anyone feel unwelcomed. FWIW, I have absolutely nothing against mixed breed dogs. It's the manner in which they've been marketed in order to fool people in to believing they are the "next hottest thing". I would never accuse anyone who owns a mix of jumping on the "designer dog" bandwagon, though. I do not know nor do I need to know the circumstances of how someone came about thier pet...it's really none of my business. But if you come here & ask for advice, you'll get my opinion. ;) I always try to answer politely yet honestly. I never want to create drama or hurt someone. I only try to give a different view. I guess I got off topic a bit. Sorry. I hope no one feels unwelcomed here b/c of something I've posted. If so, I apologize. :aimeeyork |
No no no, I am not offended...I guess it was more the tone of the posts. There are (I think) 3 current posts going around about 'designer doggies'. No one said anything specific that upset or hurt me, I was just inferring from wording and such. This is why chat boards can cause people to go crazy...no facial expressions, no tone of voice, etc. I just know that I am absolutely in love with Piper! |
As I have posted in another thread, Yorkies evolved from (I think) 3 different terrier breeds. So in a way a Yorkie was a "designer dog" in the very beginning. Who is to say that in years ahead a Morkie won't be recognized as a breed of its own like the Yorkie? |
Welcome to YT. :) My daughter has a Yorkie/Jack Russell mix...sweetest dog in the family. I love Miss Daisy and I don't view her any differently than my three yorkies. In fact, my love for Daisy is what got me wanting a puppy and prompt my reach for Rily. Daisy was not a designer bred pup and I didn't pay a lot for her. :) |
You and your morkie are welcome here. What people usually have issue with is the breeding of the designer dog when there are so many mixed breeds put to sleep in shelters. |
You and Piper are very valuable and needed members of YorkieTalk. I started a thread about "designer dogs" - I hope my thread didn't offend you. What hurts my heart is knowing that so many people combine multiple pure breeds and then advertise them as some exotic "designer dogs" and sell them for huge amounts of $$. It just seems sad that the quest for the almighty dollar the intentionally mixed breeds have become so highly sought after from "breeders" when there are so many mixed breeds in shelters who desperately need homes. Most of the dogs that I grew up with were mutts" from the pound. We called them "Henzi 57". It wasn't necessary for us to give them a fancy-schmancy name. They were what they were - mixed dogs who were loved unconditionally. |
Oh, I know about the money making side of this. I see 'Golden-Doodles' for sale for $1000 all the time! Really?!?! I actually enjoy watching the ajcexchange.com ads. There are pure breeds and mixes listed for crazy prices and I watch week after week as they drop from $800+ to $300 to $250....it makes me laugh! My last two pups were true blue street mutts. One we found on the side of the road as an 8 week old puppy!! The other we got from pound at around a year old. They both lived 10+ years and were the best dogs!! |

As others have said, I do have a problem with people breeding to a fad, rather than considering all the responsibilities of breeding healthy dogs that are guaranteed to always have a home. This is also a problem with many purebred dogs as well, sadly. Also, many people here got their yorkies from pet stores, and didn't learn until later that their dog came from a mill. Regardless of how we got here, we're here, and we're happy to have you. |
Of course you and Piper are welcome here! She is such a cutie. :) My problem with mixed breeds is the same as many other people have already mentioned: they are being marketed as "designer" to turn a hefty profit, usually for BYB and millers. I personally don't know of any reputable breeders creating Morkies or Shorkies or Chorkies or Maltipoos...and the list goes on. I personally love all dogs - purebred or mutt. My brother has a mutt from the pound and he is about 25 pounds of pure sweetness. What I cannot stand is greedy breeders selling "mutts" for thousands of dollars when there are millions of dogs in rescues and shelters, many of whom will be put to sleep before they find a home. |
Poppy is a mixed breed. Half human half yorkie haha! She acts like a little person anyway lol. I am glad you and your sweet morkie are here :D I think we care and love ALL dogs here on YT. :D xxxx |
Mixed breeds being exploited for the sole purpose of making money, I feel is the main point that most posters are trying to get across. Whether a dog is a full, mixed, champion, or not should never matter. The most important thing is that they all need and deserve our love and protection, and I can tell by your posts that you fit into that category. :aimeeyorkYorkieProud:aimeeyork |
Of course you are welcome here! I purchased Roxie as a full blooded yorkie, but plenty of people have asked me if she is mixed with silky because of her coloring, I tell them Im not sure, but regardless I love her to pieces and dont really care..Like someone else said shes half yorkie half human..haha. |
I think Chattiesmom summed it up well. It's not mixed breed dogs I have a problem with, after all, nearly all the dogs in my life have been mixes dumped by someone else. Some were healthy, others got the worst health problems of both breeds. The creation of the Labradoodle, although done with good intentions, has led to a plethora of back yard breeders who are throwing two dogs together with no thought of what exactly they are creating. Genetics is such a complicated thing even when you know long histories on your dams and sires. Too many people are breeding blindly yet selling the public on the idea that these new mixes are healthier or have/don't have certain traits without any good data to back it up. I lump the terms "designer dogs" and "hybrids" right down there with "teacup" and "pocket pup"- marketing terms meant to sell a product to a public that may or may not be doing there homework before bringing a pup in to their home. |
A lot of people on YT have mixed breeds! We have a Yorkie Poo ourselves! :) The issue revolves more around the breeders of mixed breeds! |
Great informative thread, thanks for starting it, and I hope you now can see the difference, it's not about the dogs, it's about the breeders! All dogs are lovable, but not all of them should be bred, and certainly not indiscriminately! Some purebred breeders are no better than mixed breed breeders, they are breeding their pets solely for profit! I believe we should support the best breeders we can find, when you give fanancial support to a breeder, you are telling them that you approve of their breeding program. |
You and Piper are so welcome here! :) We're glad to have you! |
I saw a yorkie/maltese at my vet's office recently. She was beautiful. Later I met the guy who owns her, told him to call me if he ever needed a new home for her. |

After reading the responses from everyone it has helped me understand where you are all coming from. So thanks again for the thread and the sincere posts it truly has helped....hugs Cheryl & Lexi |

I understand about your breeder even if I don't agree with breeding mixes. We have a parti yorkie boy now, and I feel the very same way you do about our boy's breeder. Even though many here do not agree with breeding parti yorkies, and tend to lump all of the parti breeders together, I've have learned there are big differences in breeders. I've yet to come across any breeder that is as devoted to her babies as Tammy. She does truly love them as members of her family, and that is not a phrase I use often about breeders. |
you are more than welcome here. my two are supposed to be purebreds, but who on earth knows for sure. in fact my male is supposed to be a purebred Silky Terrier and yet he's accepted as a yorkie just like every other member of the family. we're all a bunch of dog lovers in the long run. sure it sucks when someone takes two purebred dogs and mixes them up and sells them to the unsuscpecting public for outrageous fees. they are mixed which is totally fine, but it's not "designer" it's just mixed and they shouldn't cost more than a purebred or even truely as much as a purebred....but other than that all dogs are welcome. there is no descrimination here :p not to mention i at times invite people to join that don't even have a yorkie just cause it's so darn much fun around here ;) |
Just wanted to first say, IMO, everyone is welcome here be it a mixed, partie, anything that resembles a yorkie_____. As long as YOU love them and they are treated well, that's what matters. I ALSO have to say that it's REALLY weird that.... 1. Your name is Rikki (So is mine!!! spelled the same too!) 2. You have a great dane (that was gonna be my next dog when we get a house.. APTS won't let us have more than 2 dogs...) and 3. My first dog i was looking into getting was gonna be a Morkie. But my yorkie was closer and seen her first and fell in love <3.. Anyway.. WEIRD coincidences!!! Your baby is cute and loved, that is ALL that matters!!!! |
I so agree w/everyone here! Wanted too also share with you that both of mine are rescues so I have no idea if they have others in there too...would explain why Bijous bodys so long. LoL honestly, its the same for most rescue owners. We love them all!!! You are the perfect fit for our yt family....cause you love your babies!!! |
