QS, I tried treats, but Max isn't food motivated when there is another dog to bark at. I bounced around and tried so many different methods. Probably what helped the most was training with a very patient and calm big dog. I also started feeding Max a grain-free, higher protein diet that may have helped reduce anxiety (so I've been told by some dog foodies). |
QS, I think you have a bigger challenge with Thor because he has had at least 2 very bad experiences with other dogs, including another Yorkie. I would think that would be enough to give any dog trust issues. |
For what it's worth I live in a big city. And when I walk my little one, I am maybe over alert. For I am constantly monitoring for dogs walking towards me. ON city streets often times there is nowhere to go. I try to quickly assess the owner and oncoming dog But I always shorten up leash, and will bring Razz to my other side when passing strange dogs. I have once or twice picked him up, because of a number of factors. Owner clueless big dog uncontrolled, or small dog uncontrolled. Either situation is dangerous. When I walk my big dogs, it is always one at a time. I do the same, shorten lead, but still a loose lead. And get them to heel right side if necessary. I have a special lead, which allows for two correcting hands on the lead, without tightening up the lead against the collar. My oldest is my male and the best trained at this time. I am very confident with him will all dogs big or small. In fact he loves small dogs. He will hunker down and invite play with them. And he is very gentle. But still with strange dogs I am always cautious. |
My (very aggressive) rescue female ran out of our not-supposed-to-be-open gate because she saw a big dog being walked on the sidewalk across the street. She charged him, he picked her up and threw her aside like she was nothing. She did get a puncture wound in her neck, but it turned out not to be serious, and I found out later from the dog's owner that he was missing several teeth. Fortunately for us! |
