My Yorkie's Ears
 
My puppy was born on April 28 on would be 4 months soon next week. His ears us still not standing up. When will his ears stand up? Should I do anything? I massage it everyday. Do I need to bring him to the groomer to shave the tipif his ears so to help him make hus ears stand up. Eceryone's advise is appreciated. Thanks

Our yorkie Kinder's ears were down so we taped them . Our vet shaved her ear hair partially off and put tapes on. Our breeder showed us also how to do it. Kinder's ears have been standing for over a week now and she is going on 5 months old born 4/3/2010. You have to be consistent tape 3 days then take the tape off for a day. It takes two people to tape because they are so wiggly. Keep the hair off the ears too. Best thing is go to your breeder or have your vet show you how. Hope this helps you. Also the ears go down when teething sometimes. Sue

Try shaving them, and see if that helps. If it doesn't then you'll have mto tape them. There are many ways to do it, you can search on here for it or just google it

Shaving the tips can help. It gets the extra wieght off of the tops of the ears. But sometimes a yorkies' ears just stand up late or not at all. I don't have any experience with taping the ears, so I can't help you there. I've heard (don't know if its true or not) that sometimes the larger pups' ears may stand up later than a smaller pup's ears.

Bilbo was nearly a year old before his ears finally both stood up permanently. He weighs eight pounds and has "bat ears". Shaving his ears helped, but we thought the one floppy ear was pretty cute!

I tipped/shaved the ends of their ears on all three of my yorkies almost as soon as I brought them home. I also fed them a little cottage cheese and/or plain yogurt. I didn't have to tape them. :)

Interesting! Can you tell me how the cottage cheese and yogurt help? I am getting Stormy's ears trimmed up tomorrow and am very interested in helping her ears go up without taping if possible. Thanks!

The protein helps build the cartilage in the ears, plus yogurt is good to help the tummy adjust if you are changing their food. I only give them a little....maybe a couple of tsp., usually as a snack.:) Minnie Mia's ears were already up when I got her at 12 1/2 weeks, but both Rily and Saydee had a half flop going on....both were up within two days of trimming them about half way down the ear. As someone else posted, teething can cause them to flop a little too...Saydee's did that, but were back up in just a few days.:)

Very good info! Thanks! What kind of yogurt/cottage cheese do you use? Full-fat? I assume plain on the yogurt. :)

Great advice here, but just want to speak up on behalf of our floppy-eared friends (being that mine is one ;)). If your baby's ears don't go up, it's not the worst thing in the world...happy and healthy is the goal. And I must admit, there are some pretty adorable floppy-eared babies I've seen on here!

Yes, plain yogurt and low fat cottage cheese.:)

You can also try greek yogurt. It has more protien. That what I feed Fynnlie, he gets about a tbsp once a week just mixed in with his food.

I don't remember which website I found this on .... I wish i could remember cause she is brilliant , I tryed it and it worked.

I had a puppy that was 6 months old and her ears still were not standing. Even shaving them..and taping them ,She would have that off in under an hour.
Take a paper grocery store bag cut into shape of yorkies ear.... Glue on this inside of the ear with eyelash glue (only put glue on 2 sides.) After about 3 days they just fall off. Her ears stayed up after one time.

I thought it was calcium, not protein?

I've been trimming Max's ears and taping them. After I take the tape off they stand up for about an hour. I just bought some cottage cheese and yogurt.

And if they never stand up so be it!

My Little Jackie's ears were up when I first got her. When she started teething they went down. Once finished teething they were up. She got stung by a bee and they went down again. The vet said with pain they fall down sometimes. Now she is 3 yrs. old and they are standing up all the time, Do not worry,it will all work out to be fine.

My yorkies ears never went up either - and I think she's beautiful (of course I'm biased - LOL!)

Yes you need to shave the ears. The hair on them can weigh them down. You can also tape the ears and it will help them stand. I have seen some that will never stand because they are to big.

Thank you for sharing. That is so neat; I had no clue that those foods would build the cartilage up in their ears. (: And I'll use the yogurt when I switch her food; we are on Nature's Recipe but I'm stoked about the new Blue Buffalo food for small breed dogs. I think it is chicken and oatmeal. (: I've been letting her lick the yogurt rims, but I didn't know that it was good for her.

I've heard rave reviews on the Mack 3 razor to shave a Yorkie's ears. I haven't done it yet, but I was told to shave the inside when she is calm and asleep, and shave the tips with 2 swifts of the razor. Also, we are approaching the time for a puppy cut. Will they be plucking her ear hair???

One of Quincy's ears did not stand up till he was 8 mos old I had given up and was ok with it not standing and one morning POOF!! They were both perky as could be up ever since.

Nope that's not bad, if you love them the way they are then don't bother with them. I too, think the floppy ears are cute.

i love my puppy's floppy ears and i am going to be so sad if they stand up. i have noticed that they are slowly starting to go up. he is so cute with floppy ears!
