Getting off the bed Well the day has finally come when Ms Lily has learned to jump up on my bed. The bed is higher than the average bed so the standard doggie stairs have not been high enough to reach. I have 2 girls. Lola has tried to make it up but so far has been unsucessful. However, I am sure it is just a matter of time now. Has anyone had to get steps for their little ones that are higher than normal? I am very nervous about them getting down as they just fly right off the sid. They also paly when they are up on the bed and I'm afraid they are going to tumble over the side. (they both hip & elbow dysplasia - so not a good idea) I did buy some steps before but they were not high enough and they were very steep and shallow. I was thinking maybe I could make something for them out of the foam blocks or something like that. Any help would be appreciated. |
I bought a regular set (the "As seen on TV" ones). They seem to work great. Our bed is pretty high, but Hammer is also a larger Yorkie so he seems to have no problem. I know the set I bought comes with an extension. Maybe other ones do too? |
My husband made some awesome ramps for both our couch and bed so that they don't have to jump up or down. For a taller bed, the ramps going to longer. I will post pictures of our ramps tonight when I get home. I think it is important to have steps or ramps and to encourage them not to jump down because it really does unnecessary damage to their joints. |
I have a pretty high four poster bed. I just got some pet stairs from Walmart online that were pretty tall. They come up almost to the top of the bed. |
I got these from Bed Bath and Beyond. My bed is fairly high. The last step onto the bed is a bigger step than the rest due to my bed's height, but they can make it. PupStep Plus Dog Stairs - Bed Bath & Beyond |
I have As Seen On TV steps that also were to low. We took some pieces of wood and crazy glued them to the base. The first step is the wood we added to it. |
If the steps aren't tall enough, maybe you can put them on top of some foundation to make them taller? Maybe a wooden box covered in carpet or thick material? Secure the steps to the foundation to keep them from tipping. We use ottomans around here - they're both decorative and functional. |
i have 2 yokies, and 2 sets of steps to my bed, cant teach either of them to use the others steps and i have tried and tried, shaffer has the steps from bed bath beyond they are pretty tall and go to the top of my bed, cooper my little guy uses the steps as seen on tv with the fake sheep skinish stuff, he jumps from the steps to the bed and prefers them. I think its the plastic he doesnt like on the other steps. |

I bought a long ottoman with storage inside. It goes almost the width of my bed and I put it at the end. Oliver caught on pretty quick and now always uses it, and Mya didn't even need to be taught, she just watched Ollie. She can jump on my bed on her own, which is nuts as it's high - but she doesn't do it often. Really the ottoman was not much more than the stairs (I got it on sale for $75) and it's very useful, I store all my bedding in it. I don't let them play on the bed... really it isn't safe. If they start to wrestle, I tell them off and they go play on the floor. |
My older yorkie, Vinnie, had a bad experience jumping off a high bed a few years ago. Ever since, he has been hesitant to jump off the bed. I looked at steps, but our bedroom isn't really big enough. What I did was get a folded exercise mat and put it next to our bed. I taught him to jump on that soft surface first, and then jump off the mat onto the floor. Worked like a charm. He quickly caught on that he could land on that safely and then get to the floor. He only jumps off the side of the bed where the mat is. The mat is just a folded exercise mat that I got from Sports authority. |
