Who should I contact? While I was in class this morning, I was told a very disturbing story. A friend of mine mentioned a woman she was planning on getting a pit bull puppy from. The pups are six weeks old, and the runt has been having some problems. The puppy started having seizures and foaming at the mouth about two days ago. No emergency vet was seen, and the owner waited until this morning to take the puppy in. While we were at school, the owner sent a text informing my friend that the puppy had LS and had to be put down, because she could not afford the proper care. I asked my friend, if the owner knew anything at all about LS. She sent a text, and the owner replied "No." I told my friend that LS was a genetic trait and that the parents should not be bred again. A little while ago, my friend sent me a text telling me that the owner would not listen to what she had to say about LS and that she intends on breeding this pair again. My friend has decided against taking one of the pups. What I am wondering is if there is someone I can get in touch with that may prevent this owner from breeding these two dogs again. This, in my eyes, is animal cruelty. She already knows that this pair will produce a pup with LS and yet she will continue to breed. This is premeditated cruelty. Has anyone heard of any laws that may prevent this? Sorry for the long thread, I just want to do something to keep this from happening again with this owner. Any input or advice would be great. :aimeeyorkYorkieProud:aimeeyork |
I haven't heard about any laws that say you can not breed a pair of dogs that will knowingly produce a puppy with some form of health issue. It's more of a 1) I can cover my money loss of putting the pups down with how much I'll get from the other dogs, 2) the breeder does not care for the dogs in her posession. There should be a law against it, but then, there should be laws against so many things regarding animals that the law-makers look in the other direction of. Le sigh. |
There should be a law, but unfortunately I doubt there is. What about contacting a breed organization (like is there a pit bull breeder organization) or if they are registered AKC, not sure if they can do anything. Worse case I would publicize you opinions against this breeder. We all know how much word of mouth can hurt a breeder or build one up. If she is unwilling to back down then the best you can do is post public reviews of experience... In order to do it properly I would call and inquire, ask questions about diseases and health of puppies and the parents, and then you have a first hand review of what she has to say. It's not a good idea to complain about her without actually being a potential customer, if that makes any sense... Good luck... I agree I think irresponsible breeders fall into the same group as puppy mills, I think a lot of people summed it up in calling them "greeders" |
If that was the case, I know a lot of humans that I want to report! |
Thanks for the advice. I will try to find out all I can about this woman. I would say breeder, but I think we all know that is not the case here. I am going by my Vet's office tomorrow to see if they can point me in the right direction. I would think that this is in the same category as neglect. In the meantime, I have printed as much info as I can about LS, and I am giving it to my friend to distribute to this woman. Hopefully, some good literature will help change her mind. I know it is a long shot, but I do feel like I need to try. Thanks again for all the help. :aimeeyorkYorkieProud:aimeeyork |
