Help Me.. JAGGER'S A Bolter!!!! Jagger is now 5 months old. He loves to go into our back yard, which is on a golf course. Our house (as are all the houses on the course) is surrounded by wrought iron fence. I never let him go outside by himself, even in the backyard and always walk him on a leash. Being a curious, impulsive little fella like most Yorkies his age, he bolts through the fence everytime he sees a rabbit, another dog in one of our neighbors yard, golfers on the course, or just because he CAN. It is giving me a heart attack! He does not respond to NO, and sometimes not to his name. The other night he ran into one of our neighbors yard about 5 houses down and they have a pit-bull mix and another mixed bred dog. They claim he is "safe", but this neighbor is a pot-smoking, n'er do well guy and I've seen another neighbor call the police on him because this "nice" dog attacked her dog. My husband has already told him if his dog comes near our house, children or pets, his a$# is his! Luckily it was at 9:30 p.m. and none of the dogs were outside. I am terrified that Jagger will seriously get hurt or killed if I don't get him trained fast. I thought about putting some chicken wire at the bottom of the fence to keep him inside of our yard. Any and all help and input from you all would be appreciated. |
Yes, definitely get some chicken wire or something to keep your little guy from getting through the fence whenever he wants. They can get into too much trouble too fast unsupervised. As for manners, I had the same problem with Eddie before I took him to obedience school. They helped me teach him to sit, stay and come, and it made a world of difference. Coming to you should be the funnest thing your Yorkie can do. To do that, get him to sit and stay, then come at your command. Always offer his favorite treat and always get excited and make it fun. I was skeptical, but it works. Check out this video for proof. You want the Sept. 25 one. www.jusspress.com/alaskayorkie |
You had better put something around the fence. I'd be sure that it was high enough that he couldn't climb over it, too. Chain link is sturdier than chickenwire and can be cut down to a height that would be acceptable to the eye and safe for Jagger, too. I'm afraid if you don't put something up that you will lose him one way or the other. The risk just isn't worth it. |
I have the same problem...I have wrought iron and they squeeze right through it. I have a large yard so I have used xpen panels to partition off a smaller area where the yokies can be outside safely. If anyone thinks of an attrative way to make the wrought iron impenetrable I would love any ideas! |

What a cute video of Eddie!! I need to get Zoe into some obedience training soon as well. That's great! |
I wanted a wrought iron fence and my two could easily get through as well, so I got chain link that is black. It's actually very attractive. I priced putting the wrought iron closer together, which is basically putting a double fence, and it was very expensive, but if you have one already, adding the needed fence so it is about 2-3 inches apart could work. Even the best trained yorkie might not be trusted to come when there is something so interested outside. I wouldn't chance it. |
Eddie is the man! I hope that Jagger will respond like that one day soon. Meanwhile, we are adding another puppy to the mix on November 9th. I don't want him "following" Jagger's lead. Also, we have to stay in compliance with our Homeowner's Association Rules. Black or Dark green chicken wire seems to blend in best. We just can't add anything we want and a chain link fence wouldn't be allowed at all. Can you tell me more about the Xpen? In fact, I'll Google it now. Thxs! |
Living on golf couse My dream home would be on a golf course. My husband and I have taken up golf and it has taken center stage. We have talked many times about what Herk would be like on a golf course. A holy terror. The grounds keeper wife at the club we belong, raises Yorkies. I was sitting outside the clubhouse one afternoon waiting on my husband to finish a tournament and the groundskeeper passed on his cart with one of her yorkies sitting beside him like a little doll. Never moved and never barked :p We laughed because we knew what our little devil would do. There is a minature collie that lives on the 3rd hole that is wonderful. He follows is dad around while he is playing it's just amazing. I do now what an escape artist is like, so be careful. |
