Looking to get another plz read I have my little max, he is 1 yr 8 months and he is spoiled and well trained at the same time. we love him so much and me and my girlfriend are out of the house from 11am till 11pm my girlfriend stops in on her lunch (she works close to home) for 1/2 hour. we must do this to save for a home. but i really feel bad to leave him that long. i would like a boy and a girl but is it better to have to boys, max is nutered. also affraid he might be jelouise. any info would be greatly appreciated. |
They say it is better to have opposite sexes, they are more likely to get along. But there are many homes with 2 or more of the same sex. As long as they are spayed/neutered, there usually is not a problem. I agree with not wanting to leave one alone all day. I think all dogs should have a buddy, even if it's a cat. Happy hunting :D |
I have a male and female that get along well. My mom has a male and female that fight quite a bit. I think it has more to do with the individual personalities of the dog more than a blanket statement about the sexes. |
We just adopted our 12 week little girl Yorkie, Mabel to be a part of our family but also as a playmate to our 16 month old male yorkie, Darwin. We were camping, so they met on neutral territory and we made sure to give Darwin extra cuddling. We've only had Mabel for 8 days now, but things are going great. They play tug-of-war and chase each other everywhere. So far, so good with a boy-girl combo. Good luck with your choice!!:) One more thing, we made sure to get a second Yorkie with an extremely similar personality to Darwin. He is playful but loves to cuddle. He's not hyper at all. Mabel is all of those things and I think this is probably the most important thing to think about instead of boy/girl. |
We got Jacie when Sophie was 15 months old. They get along great. Both are fixed. I believe Sophie would have accepted any other dog. If we ever add another one, I'm not so sure Jacie would be as accepting. I would consider how socialized your dog is and would see if you can expose Max to the considered puppy or adult dog before committing to the new dog. |
1 Attachment(s) I had my little girl for a year and a half before I decided to get another. I wasn't worried about what sex it was as Tia has such an accepting personality. Anyways a little year old male rescue came up and it was just fate. They get along perfectly and only 6 mths between them. It can work out with 2 of a kind depending on your personality of your dog.Attachment 324827 |
I agree that every dog has his own personality - and it depends on that. I have a female yorkie and a few years ago was thinking of getting her a playmate. It happened to be XMAS time and my son got his girlfriend a female yorkie which was very hyper. My yorkie is very easy going - BUT, she wanted nothing to do with this new yorkie. We had her for a few days and it proved to me that my yorkie will not get along with another dog. But a few months ago we got a male yorkie, who is also very calm - and they get along great. So for us - it was best to get opposite sex dogs. |
we added bella to the family today Ok so we were only going to look. And there was this oh so cute 9 week old female pup. And we Never put her back down. As for max he is not so happy about the new addition. Runs away from here and barks at Bella when she gets cornered. Also is giving us a little of the cold shoulder. We were very tenitive with max since we got home but he is not happy. Hope it works out. |
While I agree that having two pups together to keep each other company during the day is a good idea, I don't think it was a good idea to get a new one, a puppy in fact, at this point in your lives when she will be essentially left alone (without human supervision) for 12 hours every day. Not only is training going to be difficult at best, she may develop behaviour problems from lack of constant surveillance and training, which they need at this age. Also, 9 weeks is a little early to take her home. Some don't think so, but I feel they learn so much from momma at this age, ie bite inhibition, sharing, etc. Again, it will hinder in her training. Anyway, you got her and she is home. Hoping for the best for you, just be prepared for some work. Always acknowledge and feed Max first. Everything is Max first, then Bella. Helps him to realize he is the big brother, and Bella should not be upset about that, as pups are used to having to share attention with their littermates anyway. Good luck. |
I agree I agree my girlfriend actually is going to change her schedule at work and Bella will be home from 10-7 with a 1 0'clock visit to feed Bella lunch. |
It is still a very long time to leave a pup alone. I would say not to leave a pup alone for more then 4 hours at a time. You will not be home often enough to train her.... have you thought about a pet sitter who could come to your home while you are both at work and look after the dogs? Its really not fair IMO. |
i am going to change my hours at work so now that dog Will be home 5 hours. Bella is in a crate. And my girl friend is still going to stop in at 1 pm. That is close to the 4 hour mark. |
Congrats on your new addition...I'm sure with time they will become besties:) |
Congratulations on bella... i love the name!! :D Poppy is 7 weeks old and stays at home 3 hours in the morning in her xpen and then she has me home for an hour then my bf home for an hour and then 3 hours alone again in the afternoon so my baby gets left 6 hours alone per day. Shes does great and sleeps most of the time :D |
I hope everything works out and you two find that now wasn't the best time to add another pup, even if you did it with the best intentions. Good luck with Max and Bella. |
