Do Yorkies Like To Swim? The reason I'm asking is because we got a new pool last season. We spend a lot of time in the pool on the weekends. Do any of you have a Yorkie that enjoys the water? Does pool water irritate their skin? Thanks in advance. Don |

Jackson loves to swim. ANY body of water he can get into.... he does. My dad has a big inground pool. He highly enjoys it. Also, any beaches, lakes, etc. He's in. The chlorine doesn't bother him, the dogs even drink it sometimes, and he swims both with lifejacket and without, and knows the steps to get out. |
I have several that will swim in anything including their water bowl. I have a baby pool for them. When they come out of a pool with chemicals they will NEED a bath just like you take a shower. Remember the skin is the largest organ in your body! sparklingbluyorkies.com |
Do Not Leave Dog Alone at Pool! I have a friend who's Yorkie fell in and no one was around. The dog didn't know how to find the steps and downed. She taught her other dogs to go to the steps to get out and has no worries now. |
I think it all depends on the dog. My male loves the water but my female doesn't. Guess you will have to see!! |
1 Attachment(s) Bailey loves to swim...Bella won't jump in YET! but she likes to be splashed:D |
My 5 yr old loves the pool but my two 6 month olds don't care for the pool or water in general it's hard to even give them baths. |
Dudley will allow us to put him in with us, we also have a raft that he like to jump in on. He has never JUMPED in the water, i think b/c he can't see the bottom (hense the raft). Our pool is salt chlorinated, so i really don't have to bath him afterwards, BUT when it's bath time I usually do it poolside and use the hose to rinse him in the summer then he will sit in a chaise to dry:D Then I serve him a margarita:p:p:p |
Razz loves the water Razz loves lake water, but he really came into loving this summer. We almost always have lifejackets on for two reasons. Our home lake can have pretty big undertows, and secondly the lifejacket encourages proper back - leg alignment when swimming. |
Tila loves to swim. I didn't think she would, I made sure I took a trip to the lake this year and prepared ahead of time. I picked up a life jacket for her at Petsmart. When we got to the lake, I put her in the vest and she followed me right in and had a blast swimming. |
Thanks for the replies. I guess it just depends on the dog and their likings. I really enjoyed the videos of Jackson's summer fun...what a trooper! |
Rhett loves to swim (with a life jacket). But Scarlett can't stand water in any way, shape or form. I've heard (but can't find any good documentation of it) that dogs in pools can throw off the chemical balance. Also, because yorkies have hair and not fur, the chlorine can discolor the coat some. Wetting hair down first helps keep it from absorbing as much of the chlorine filled water. |

Mine don't really like to swim but having said that, i will say up at the lake Zoe when we go out in the paddle boat it never fails at some point, Zoe falls into the water. I always scoop her right out. (Do you think we have a fish big enough to eat her?) And I have to wonder if she hates the water so much, why is she not more careful? |
Oh yeah! I love swimming threads where I can share my favorite videos! :bananna: |
My Catherine loves to swim - it took us a few times walking down to the edge of the water and letting her get her "feet wet" to get her to really want to swim, but now she loves it! :) River, lake, pond, pool, whatever she just wants to swim! :) |

I'm jealous. Melba doesn't even want to take a bath  |
Mine love to swim, they would swim all day if I would let them. I can tell when they get tired and then we all get out for a while. But they love it, when they see the towels coming out of the closet they run to the pool. |

Well, I think little Harlie is going to like the water. Yesterday we were in the pool and she came to edge and then to me. I walked around with her a bit and got her feet wet, she wasn't afraid at all. I put her on the first step and the water comes just to her neck line. She is able hop out from the step with no problems. We'll have her swimming in her vest in the next couple weeks. As usual, thanks for all the replies and cute videos. Don |
