Books with Yorkies as the main (or even supporting) character??? I LOVE books!! So, I thought it would be fun to see if we could get a list going of books that feature a Yorkie as the main, or even supporting, character!!! I'm not talking about Yorkshire Terrier owner's manuals or training books... I'm talking about stories/novels...fiction or non-fiction, children or adult! This should be fun, and hopefully we'll all find out about books we had no idea about!!! Ok, so I'll start! Here are the ones I know about: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum (Toto--and the other "Oz" books in which Toto appears) Yorkie Doodle Dandy by William A. Wynne (Smoky) The Gift of Jazzy by Cindy Adams (Jazzy) Living a Dog's Life, Jazzy, Juicy, and Me by Cindy Adams (Jazzy and Juicy) Journey of Tapiola by Robert Nathan (Tapiola) Tapiola's Brave Regiment by Robert Nathan (Tapiola) My Dog, Cat by Marty Crisp (Catullus--"Cat") Puddin' the Yorkshire Terrier (Purse Pup) (Puddin') How the Yorkie Rescued Santa, An Adventure in Doggerel by Oliver W.B. Porter, as told by Carol S. Porter (a YT member!!!) Ok, I'm sure there have to be others out there that I don't know about!! So let's have it!! :D |
I had no idea about any of those books! lol. Thanks for posting. Although, I thought Toto was always a Cairn Terrier? |
Great thread!:) I'm remembering a YT member who wrote a Yorkie story book. Wish I could find it. Maybe someone will remember it. |

Wow, I had no idea of any of those. |
Lyman Frank Baum [May 15, 1856-May 6, 1919] didn't include a breed in his description of Toto in the original 1900 book edition of 'The Wizard of Oz'. In Chapter 1 'The Cyclone', readers were presented with "a little black dog, with long, silky hair and small black eyes that twinkled merrily on either side of his funny, wee nose." The illustrations in the book led many to believe that Baum had in mind either a Cairn Terrier, or a Yorkshire Terrier, which was popular at the time of the book's writing. In the beloved 1939 film version of 'The Wizard of Oz', the part of Toto was played by Terry [1933-1944], a Cairn terrier. In the 1985 film 'Return to Oz', the part was played by a Border Terrier. |
In regard to Toto....the literary Toto was based on illustrator W.W. Denslow's own Yorkie!!! :D Pretty cool huh?! Isn't it funny that there's so much written speculation when the illustrator HAD a Yorkie?! :p |
Read the two by Cindy Adams!! They were ok for me ;) |
Wow! I love to read, but had no idea of these books with Yorkies in them. I will have to check into those. There are plenty with cats, I know. |

Just for reference, these are the only "adult" books in my list: Yorkie Doodle Dandy; The Gift of Jazzy; and Jazzy, Juicy, and Me. The rest are children's books. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Journey of Tapiola, and Tapiola's Brave Regiment are all longer childrens books (>100 pgs), and the last 3 are picture books (I think). I found this on Amazon: |
I've got the Smokey and Tapiola books. I also remember hearing/reading that the original Toto was a Yorkie. And, I've always considered Chewbacca the Wookie from Star Wars to be a Yorkie. My Yorkies have been vocal and make those "Wookie" noises. |
I found a few more fictions but they seem to be out of print already.... All The President's Dogs by Jim Mueller Rosamunda's Revenge by Emma Craig Loveliness by Elizabeth Stewart |

Found more.... The Adventures of Little Tyke: A Loveable Little Yorkshire Terrier Puppy ~ by Marjorie A. Yobe Bruce: A Yorkie's Tale By Hackett, Charles J., Ph.D. |
My Mom told me that she just listened to a book on tape by Fern Michaels. She said a Yorkie played a predominant part in the story. Can't remember the name. Anyone? |
