Rabid bats in my area! Here is a very good reason to make sure that you animals are vaccinated for rabies. This is from the Chicago Tribune and these rabid animals were found within miles of MY HOME  8/19/10 | 480 views Another rabid bat found in Will County By Michelle Manchir/TribLocal reporter Officials confirmed Thursday that a dead bat with rabies was found on a sidewalk outside a Bolingbrook home, but said no one in the area has been exposed to the disease. The animal was found near a home on Whitby Court, on the northeast part of the village near East Boughton Road. Four people and two animals live near the property, but were not exposed to rabies, said Vic Reato, spokesman for the Will County Health Department. Will County has now reported six rabid bats so far this year, with four since July 13, including findings in Naperville and in Frankfort. “Bats can be found anywhere,” Reato said. “As urban areas expand, we are coming into more frequent contact with these animals and all other forms of wildlife.” Human exposure to rabies, which usually occurs when the animal bites a person, is fatal when untreated. Reato said there is no way for a person to know whether an animal is rabid, but bats are rarely active during the day time. If they are spotted during daylight in populated areas, it could mean that they are rabid. Officials aren’t ruling out the possibility that more rabid bats might be found. "The summer months are typically the most active time for bats, and August is usually an extremely common month for potential bat exposures," said Lee Schild, Will County Animal Control Administrator. Animal bites and any contact with bats should be reported to the Will County Animal Control at (815) 462-5633. Another rabid bat found in Will County - Triblocal - Voice of the town |
How very scary. I hate it even more 'cause bats are so totally awesome. |
Yikes. I heard they were in our area awhile ago. I am so scared of them. |
Yikes! I just text both my sisters about this article! How scary! |
Great, that's near me! |
That sucks. I love bats and have been trying to get my DH to build a couple of bat houses for the side of our house, under the eaves. I hope this doesn't make the town go on an anti-bat campaign. A couple of sick bats doesn't make them all bad. |
Bats can be very scarey, especially if you find your furbaby carrying one around like we did one day. It was dead and we had to have it sent off to see if it had rabies. Thankfully the test came back negative, but it was extremely frightening. I had always loved to watch the bats at night flying around, but not so much after that. |
Thats scary stuff! :( |

Love the post! I have been doing research as to why this year the amount of rabies cases in animals has double, and this is happening everywhere, not only in the US. It seems to be mystifying all. I am with you, I always recommend the rabies shot, as the alternative is not something any pet owner would want their pup to go through. If I can find any additional information as to why this is happening I will post. |
You might be able to call your local health department to get their insight. It will be very interesting to see what you are able to find out. |
OMG do you need sequined outfits for your babies?? Let me know, I can stitch them up like a fast food order and top them with sock monkeys!:D |
That is why it is important to vaccinate against rabies. It could be bats, raccoons, opossums and who knows what else may come in contact with our furkids. One day many years ago I was hanging laundry...I have the kind that has two t-poles and three lines stretched out on them...so I was in my yard not on a porch. I turned around and there was this raccoon kinda stumbling around. In less than two minutes the poor thing died, animal control said it most likely was rabid. Point is these animals can come out of nowhere and be in your yard in an instant. I don't know about your Yorkies but Bentley is interested in anything in HIS yard and wouldn't hesitate to go up to something. |
This happened to us too with a Raccoon in our yard. It came out of nowhere and was walking circles in one area. It looked to be in pain. We called in animal control and they said it was probably rabid. Quote:
