New Mommy Questions - Licking, Loving, Training
 

Hey gang: It's day 3 of my new life with my baby girl, and she's moved in quite nicely (like she always lived here). LOL She's not shy at all!

However, I have a few "new mom" questions that I know y'all will be able to help with. (Thank you in advance for any responses. I really appreciate it).

1) Today she started licking herself in her leg/private area. This is new. She didn't do this on Monday or Tuesday. She's 11 weeks old. Is this normal, or does she have a UTI or something? I looked in the area, and it doesn't seem abnormal, but then again, I'm not really sure what I'm looking for...? I didn't really look at that area before she started licking it. LOL Sorry for the dumb question, I might have "new mom-itis" where I get nervous over every new sound, etc...

2) Is she too young to start training "tricks" - I wanted to teach her sit, stay, come, etc. Or are there better choices I should do?

3) She doesn't like to be picked up or "loved" on (petting, etc.). When I try to pet her she "bites" at my hand, thinking it's playing. If I try to pick her up to kiss her or love on her she squirms until I set her back down. Is there a better approach I should be doing to teach her?

4) She is VERY strong willed, and smart.... but right now I feel like her life is just sleeping and then playing. (and she's not one to play by herself, she wants to be entertained). Then when playtime is over (usually after I'm exhausted and ready to make dinner, or bathe, etc.) she goes into her "room" and sleeps, until it's playtime again. Am I doing this wrong?

I'm sure there will be MANY more questions to come. This is my first dog ever, and I'm soooo concerned to give her a wonderful life of discipline and love. Anyone else ever feel like you're completely failing? LOL

I'm so sorry if the questions sound dumb. I just want to be the best mommy I can be. :)

Welcome to the world of Yorkie "motherhood" LOL
Its like, you need to keep an eye on them 24/7! They're so tiny and have their little personalities.
The vet must think we are crazy cause if our kiddie sneezes, we call him, or if we think she's swallowed something...crazy mom is calling again.
IMO, the way you're acting is perfectly normal :D

About the licking, biting and those behaviours you mentioned, our vet told us its very normal that they do this when we asked him bout Kenzie doing it. She's 10 weeks old when we got her.
And there's always Yorkie Talk to get great advice from people who know more than us about yorkies.

My Roxie is almost 4 years old and she doesn't like to be picked up and hugged at all. If I try to pick her up for any reason she just runs away from me. Your baby is still very young, and things could definitely still change, but some pups just aren't affectionate.

1) The licking is completley normal, she is just keeping herself clean.
2) Nope she isn't too young to teach her tricks.
3) She dosnt like to be picked up because she is so full of enegery she just wants to run run run.. dont worry once she has tired herself out she will come for a cuddle.
4) A puppy's life consists of sleep, eat, potty and play... dont worry your doing fine :)

Don't feel bad if your baby doesn't like to be picked up and cuddled. Boo is 2 years old, and he has never liked to be picked up and held. He's still very affectionate, but it has to be his idea. He loves to cuddle and snuggle, but he likes to have his paws on the ground, and will only snuggle if he decides he wants to, then he comes to me and climbs up and lays on me. You'll learn more about your dogs personality as time goes on and things will get easier! Good luck with the new baby! You are in for a lot of fun!

I'm a new Mom myself. We have had Shadow for 6 days, she's 14 weeks old. I was positive that she wasn't eating and drinking enough and spent the first couple of nights getting up with every whimper. Turns out it was just the adjusment, she's already eating much better.

Her personality is coming out more each day. Day one and two, we figured she was a very laid back dog, but we were wrong!

None of your questions are dumb. If you can't ask it here, then where? You'll get all different kinds of advice, everyone does things their own way. Just go with your gut.

Bella learned to sit, down, and stay by the time she was 8 or 9 weeks old. Not too early at all. Be persistant and patient. :)

OMG! Y'all are so sweet & amazing! I can not tell you how much I appreciate all your advice and encouraging words. :love:

Gia is a handful, but totally worth it. I am so in love with this little girl. She's sooooooooo smart, but equally stubborn, so training is going to be difficult, but I'm working on ways to incorporate it as "playtime" for her.

Again, many hugs & puppy kisses to you all. I adore each of you, and Gia will thank you too when she's a wonderful well-mannered grown dog. :D
