Sturdier Yorkies Are there any sturdy Yorkie lines out there? My pup and my daughters pup come from a very reputable breeder who breeds Westminister Best of Breed dogs, but they have such fragile thin bones. I am afraid to get another Yorkie because of the fear of damaging our current dogs or the future dogs. We have already had LP surgery on one, and the other might need it as well, PLUS we had a broken front leg from a fall. You love these little guys so much and it is so awful to see them in pain. Since they are both small (4.4lbs & 3.6lbs) we would have to get another smallish dog no larger than 5 lbs to be safe for these tiny ones. Any suggestions? |
I'm not a breeder, this is just my opinion... I'm interested to hear what breeders have to say. I bought my little guy recently and his parents were 4.5-5lbs, and Harley was not the runt of the litter, and is only 3lbs at 9 months and fairly fragile despite the fact that his brothers and sisters have all out grown him. (Mind you he's hyper and active, but still very small) So even if you do find a sturdy line, there is no guarentee. My breeder wouldn't sell me Harley's brother even if I wanted him because he was 2oz at birth (harley was 4oz) and told me I was better to take the bigger boy.... So I did, Harley's baby brother is now 5-6lbs already, he's a porkie yorkie! Harley is sleek and tiny... Just my opinion, good luck, and I'm interested in hearing what others have to say, I'd like to know how to get a sturdier one too, if we buy harley a roommate he's going to have to be sturdy enough to keep up with him. lol |
Awww....your poor little babies. It's heartbreaking when they get hurt, they are so precious. The only sturdy yorkies I have seen were the ones that weighed 7 lbs or more. That is precisely the reason why I made it a point to search for larger males when I was looking. Maybe there are 5lbs and under yorkies who have sturdier bones, but honestly, I haven't seen them. I'm hoping one of the breeders will have an answer for you. By the way, we knew our boys would be 'larger', because they were each close to 4 lbs at 12 weeks. |
I agree with Amanda... If you want a sturdy yorkie, I would search for a larger one :) my boy is 7 pounds and feels like a little tank... He is so muscular! However, my 3 lb little girl is pretty fragile conpared to him... Her bones just feel so tiny. Goof luck in your search :) |
Gatsby is 6 pounds and he is very sturdy i have only ever had one problem with him he strained his knee when my mom sat on him but really he was fine. I had another yorkie for a while who was 2 pounds and the whole time i had her i was terrified she would get hurt she seemed to always be limping and i was worried sick when the family i got her from took her back there small child stepped on her and broke both front legs |
My Baron came from a 3.5 lb. female and a 4 lb. Male. She had 5- 2 oz. male babies and they range from 4lbs. to 8 lbs. in size. Baron is 7.3 lbs. But, he still worries me when he hurts himself! He still sleeps on the bed with everyone else, Just in a soft crate, I'm afraid he'll fall off the bed and break something!! He was 5 pounds at 6 months when I got him and since he was on Steroids for Pancreatitis is built like a little chubby tank, But, He's so clumsy....Good-Luck in your search for a sturdier Yorkie....:) |
Bandit was the runt and took FOREVER to grow to a whopping 4.5 pounds but Nala is the same size (height/length) as him and is a full pound (if not more by now) bigger but it's solid muscle! She was the biggest of her litter. |
Both of my kidz are tanks...Keegan weighs in at ~15#...Sweet Sophie at ~10#. However Sugarmama's Sugar is about 3.5# and SHE is sturdy....believe it or not...she has a solid bone structure. Who knew!?! |
