Can you tell if a puppy will grow a 'silky' coat? Hi everyone. I have wanted a yorkie forever, and i have everything i need for it -except the puppy itself :) I was wondering, is there some way to determine by looking at it's coat, if a puppy will have a silky or a cottony coat? Just wondering if there is something i should be looking for.... Thanks for your help- Holly |
Hello and Welcome to YT. When looking for a puppy, you always want to see the parents of the pups. I visited my breeder a month before my Gracie was born. The parents both had cotton coats so I knew Gracie would not have a silky coat. They were both very healthy, and active, clear eyes and good dispostion. That is what I was looking for. Of course, a cotton coat is a NIGHTMARE to manage, but I KNEW what I was getting into before she was even born. :) |
I have had a couple litters of yorkies and I have found thet the ones born with a spot of white on their neck seem to have the more silky coat. The slower growing coats also seem to grow in more silky. Sow the cutes fluffiest coat as a baby may not be the desirable coat. The one that is not so fluffy and fur is flatter may be more silky. I don't know if this is the rule but it seems like that is how my yorkies turned out. |
Welcome to YT!!!! I'm not sure about the coats when they are puppies. Princess is a sliky, when I got her, I just went for health above anything else. If you get to see the parents, and I hope you do, look at their coats. When are you getting your new baby? Are you looking for a boy or girl???? Good luck to you!!! I'm sure you will find the perfect one for you :) |
You really cant tell what their coat will be by the puppy coat. The parents coats can tell you though. |
Hi, and thanks. I'm really not sure about boy or girl, preferably a girl, but it's not that important. I am moving from hurricane ravaged biloxi ms to MO in the middle of November, so i would like to find a puppy at the end of november. |
